The group will be honored at the Ogden-Tooele boys basketball game, which starts at 6 p.m. at the school.

The 2013 class of honorees includes Nicky Wangsgard, Craig Slama, Ann Avondet Gilbert, Joe Liljenquist, Henry Owens and Phil Russell.

Nicky Wangsgard: Graduating class of 1990.

State champion is basketball, track and field and tennis at OHS. Selected for “Faces in the Crowd” by Sports Illustrated in 1989. All-American tennis player by National High School Athletic Association. Selected honorable mention All-American in girls basketball by Street and Smith Annual Magazine. First team All-State three years in basketball at OHS, and a three-years state champion in tennis. Attended the University of Kentucky on a full-ride scholarship. Also attended Weber State University to play tennis and basketball. Was Big Sky champion in 1994 and 1995 in No. 1 singles.1993 Big Sky All-Conference in basketball. Was 2002 NCAA mountain bike champion and 2003 NCAA road bike champion.

Craig Slama: Graduating class of 1982.

Three-year letterman and starter in football at OHS. First team All-State football in 1981. Two-year letterman in basketball and Selected team MVP in 1982. Played in the Utah All-Star Football Game. Team MVP in Baseball in 1982 and Gold Watch winner as most outstanding male athlete at OHS. Four-year scholarship to Weber State University for football. Played tight end for Weber State 1983 through 1985. Named first team All-Conference 1985, and honorable mention All-American in 1985. Winner of the Crystal Crest Award at Weber State as outstanding male athlete. Played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League.

Ann Avondet Gilbert: Graduating class of 1975.

Participated in volleyball, basketball, golf and tennis. attended Weber State University from 1975 to 1979. Participated in volleyball three years, softball four years and basketball four years. All-Conference notable mention in basketball 1977, and All-Conference in basketball in 1978 and 1979. Was Kodak All-Region VII in 1979. Coached high school girls basketball, and volleyball at Davis High School, and has worked as a basketball and volleyball official.

Joe Liljenquist: Graduating class of 1968.

Three-sport athlete at OHS with two letters in football, two letters in baseball and one in basketball. Won the state football championship in 1966. Named first team All-State 1967 and honorable mention All American by Scholastic Coach Magazine in 1967. Was winner of Gold Watch Award his senior year. Received scholarship to BYU, and was first team All-WAC as defensive end. Was starting punter for three years, averaging 40 yards per punt. Extra point and field goal kicker in 1969 – 1970. Kicked five field goals and one extra point, setting a Lavell Edwards Stadium record against Colorado State record that has stood for 44 years. Signed with and played briefly for the Houston Oilers. Received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1978.

Henry Owens: Graduating class of 1964.

Three-year letterman in track and football at OHS. Was first team All-Area his sophomore year in football and region champion in track, and was All-State in football his junior and senior year. Lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track and field his senior year at OHS, and was All-State track as a senior. Gold Watch winner at OHS and earned Thom McAnn football trophy and scholarship award for most outstanding football player in the Ogden area. Was third team All-American in Parade Magazine. Attended Weber State University on full ride scholarship. Was frst team Big Sky as a sophomore, and was third in the nation in scoring in 1965. Drafted by the New York Jets in 1968-1969, and was also drafted into the U.S. Army and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. Received a combat infantry badge, a bronze star and a purple heart for injuries. Received a bachelor’s degree in social work and worked for the Job Corps for 35 years.

Coach Phil Russell.

Has been at Ogden High School for 40 years. Attended Tooele High School, and was three year letterman in baseball and two year in football. Was All-State first team in baseball 1963, first team All-Region football in 1962, and played for the state championship in football (1962) and baseball (1963), taking second in both. Started teaching and coaching at OHS in 1973. Coached football and baseball for 27 years and girls basketball for 38 years. Has been the athletic director for the last 11 years. Won five state championships in girls basketball and 10 region championships. Became first girls basketball coach to win 500 games in the state of Utah. Was selected to the Tooele High School Wall of Fame in 1993, and was name 4-A girls basketball coach of the year by the Utah High School Activities Association in 1994. Selected to the Hall of Fame by the Utah Women’s Basketball Coaches Associationin 2000, and was selected basketball coach of the year in all divisions by the UHSAA in 2007, as well as National Federation of High School Coaches “Sectional Coach of the Year” for seven Western States. In 2011, new OHS gym floor was named after Coach Russell.
