BOYS BASKETBAll: late 3-pointer helps Viewmont past layton
LAYTON — It was worth the wait.
Delayed by one day because of parent-teacher conferences, Viewmont and Layton tipped things off on Wednesday evening with second place in Region 1 on the line.
Four quarters and one overtime later, Viewmont wrapped up the second seed in the league with a scintillating 81-78 victory over the Lancers in a game with playoff atmosphere and post season implications.
Viewmont (13-7 overall, 8-2 league) has only lost games to Region 1 Champion Davis this season, while the Lancers (15-7, 7-4) let a close one slip through their grasp at home.
“We have a two-game lead and hold the tie-breaker,” said Viewmont coach Jeff Emery. “This was a great game because Layton is similar to a team we could meet in the state tournament. It was good to test our mettle against a quality team and to beat them on their floor.”
McKay “the” Butler did it for Viewmont, sending the game into overtime on a 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds remaining in in the fourth quarter to tie it at 72.
“We got a good board after a miss and I was open, got a good look and it felt good,” Butler said.
Butler then scored six points in the overtime period, all on free throws (including three on a 3-point attempt to give Viewmont a 79-78 lead) on his way to 29 for the night and the Vikings dodged a desperation three-point try at the buzzer to sail away with the win.
“Coach has us shoot a million free throws every day at practice so I just thought of them as just another free throw,” Butler said. “If we miss a free throw we have to run and I’d rather not run.”
McKay Johnson had a double-double for the Vikings, scoring 18 points, hauling down 10 rebounds and also led Viewmont in assists with four. Kelton Hirsch added 18 points on 3-of-5 from 3-point land and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
For Layton, Jarriesse Blackmon notched a double-double on 20 points, 12 rebounds and had three assists as the Lancers relied on him much of the fourth quarter before frittering away a six point lead over the final 3:20 of the period.
Austin Hatch came off the bench to score 16 points before fouling out, while Caleb Harrop also netted double digits with 13 points but also fouled out on the three-point attempt by Butler in overtime. Mike Hibbert, who sat out all but one-and-a half minutes of the first half with foul trouble, chipped in 10 points and finished with three fouls
ROY 84, BONNEVILLE 58: At WAshington Terrace, senior Brekkott Chapman and junior Blake Lamb each scored 21 points, four Royals scored in double figures and Roy clinched at worst a split of the Region 5 title with an 84-58 runaway victory over Bonneville.
“The way they played tonight, nobody’s going to give them a run,” Bonneville coach Jason Finder said.
Senior Chase DeBoer and junior Dakota Nalder added 15 and 13 points, respectively, for Roy, while junior Sealun Erskine led Bonneville with 20.
Roy can clinch the region title outright with just one win in its final two games. Roy hosts Mountain Crest on Friday before closing out the regular season at Box Elder next Tuesday.
St. Joseph 59, Mount Vernon 32: At Murray, senior David Donlevy scored 20 points and freshman Mason White added a career-high 15 to help push St. Joseph past Mount Vernon 59-32, clinching the first seed in the Jayhawks’ division of Region 18.
St. Joseph won despite three starters – sophomores Nick Gruet, Chris O’Brien and Mike O’Brien – all missing significant action due to various ailments. Gruet and Mike O’Brien sat out the entire game while Chris O’Brien only played a couple minutes.
With the region and state tournaments coming up, St. Joseph coach Rick Stoeckl knows how important depth is at this point of the season.
“We got a tough schedule coming up,” Stoeckl said. “We got the region tournament coming up next week and then we go to the state tournament after that, so we might play seven games in 10 days. So we’re going to need that (depth).”
St. Joseph’s first game of the region tournament will be next Thursday at Father Neale Herrlich Gymnasium against an opponent yet to be determined.
Sky View 70, Ogden 36: At Ogden, led by senior Bryan Dority’s 11 points, 13 different Bobcats scored en route to a 70-36 defeat over winless Ogden.
“We struggled to score again,” Ogden coach Shawn MacQueen said. “We had some open shots, we had some open looks, we struggled to score and then we started pressing too much.”
Sky View led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter and 33-9 at halftime.
Senior Kameron Laird led Ogden with seven points.
Syracuse 63, Northridge 57: At Syracuse, five Titans scored in double figures, and Syracuse clinched a spot in the 5-A playoffs with a 63-57 victory over Northridge.
Sophomore Kalvin Mudrow scored 13 points, junior Braden Hall added 11 and seniors Caden Call, Josh Thalman and Michael Phelps each added 10 for Syracuse.
“We just really played well as a team tonight,” Syracuse coach Troy Anderson said. “They knew what was on the line and they just did a good job.”
