Syracuse High alum makes Dallas Cowboys cheerleading squad

Becoming a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader sounds difficult, but maybe it’s not quite so hard if you’re from Northern Utah.

Syracuse High alum Tasha Cruz (née Smedley) joined Fremont High alum Madeline Massingill as a member of the cheerleading team so popular it has its own reality TV show.

Cruz, who was named Miss Utah Teen USA in 2009, graduated that same year from Syracuse. She danced for the Utah Jazz for three years and then with the Phoenix Suns for three more.

It was in Phoenix that she met her husband, Trevor Cruz. The two made local news when Trevor Cruz proposed at midcourt during a Suns game. Their wedding was reported on by a local news station as well.

Trevor Cruz recently received a job offer in Dallas, so Tasha Cruz decided to try out for the Cowboys.

“She talked about (trying out for the Cowboys) when we were back in Phoenix and we were like, ‘No, we’ve always got to do what’s best for our family,’ so it kind of just got pushed to the side,” Trevor Cruz said. “But then I got a job opportunity and was like, ‘You know what? You might as well try out. We’re moving to Texas anyway.’ It’s crazy how it all panned out.”

Tasha Cruz made the Cowboys’ squad on her first try — something she’s proven good at throughout the years. She made the Jazz dancers out of high school, and when she tried out for the Suns, she also made it on her first try.

“She started dancing when she was about 4 years old and she’s always had this amazing performance quality where she just shines on stage,” said Tasha Cruz’s mother, Kristy Smedley. “That was always her best quality.”

Trevor Cruz described his wife as “the most independent person” he knows and that he goes “above and beyond” in situations because he knows she would.

Tasha Cruz’s recent accomplishment has also provided some humor, according to her husband, because of the reaction of her 6-year-old daughter.

“We’ll be out in public and she’ll be telling someone … ‘My mom’s a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader,'” Trevor Cruz said. “She’s at that age where it’s cool to do that. When (my wife) did the Suns or the Jazz … she wasn’t old enough to really understand. But now it’s like … she thinks it’s the coolest thing.

“We’re at home and she’s like, ‘I can’t believe I live with a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.’ She said that the other night and I started laughing.”
