Reports: LSU assistant Jeff Grimes set to become BYU offensive coordinator

By Brett Hein, Standard-Examiner Staff - | Dec 13, 2017

LSU offensive line coach and former BYU football assistant Jeff Grimes is set to become the Cougars’ offensive coordinator, according to multiple media reports.

FootballScoop was first to report the move late Wednesday. The Advocate in Baton Rouge and ESPN each followed with reports about the hire.

The hire is expected to become official Thursday, according to The Salt Lake Tribune and FootballScoop.

A report from The Advocate said LSU has been preparing for Grimes’ move for several days and has already hired his replacement.

Following the reports, BYU associate athletic director and three-time NFL Pro Bowler Chad Lewis tweeted his welcome to Grimes.

Coach Grimes is a great hire for BYU. He has toughness, experience, respect and smarts. Welcome back to Provo! @BYUfootball

Grimes has held offensive line positions at Boise State, Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, Virginia Tech, Auburn and LSU since 2000.

He coached the Cougars’ offensive line in 2004-06. He coached at Auburn for four seasons, including for its 2010 national championship team, and has been the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at LSU for four seasons.

Grimes would take over for former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, who ran BYU’s offense for the past two seasons but was relieved of his duties after a historically bad showing in 2017.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports offensive line coach Mike Empey and tight ends coach Steve Clark are the most likely position coaches to remain on staff for Grimes and head coach Kalani Sitake.

That could bring change to BYU’s quarterback, running back and wide receiver coaching spots, occupied in 2017 by Detmer, Reno Mahe and Ben Cahoon.

Weber State offensive coordinator Fesi Sitake, cousin of BYU’s head coach and a former receivers coach, has been named as a possible staff addition in Provo by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.
