KSL takes over management of The Zone Sports Network, to simulcast Utah Jazz games
Utah’s largest sports radio station is joining Utah’s largest radio station.
KSL Radio is taking over day-to-day operations and management of The Zone Sports Network (97.5 FM/1280 AM), the two sides announced Thursday through a press release from the Utah Jazz.
The Zone will continue to broadcast all radio calls for Utah Jazz games. The news came from the Jazz as the agreement paves the way for select Jazz games to also be simulcast on KSL NewsRadio (102.7 FM/1160 AM).
Jazz radio voice David Locke said on Twitter that simulcasts would happen as often as KSL does not have a conflict with its BYU sports broadcasts.
The team expects this to provide reach to more fans in a larger broadcast footprint.
With control over programming decisions, The Salt Lake Tribune reports that KSL has cut ties with longtime radio host Gordon Monson, also a columnist for the Tribune, who helped start The Zone in 2001. Other producers have been let go as part of the move.
Bonneville International Corp., a subsidiary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ for-profit arm called Deseret Management Corporation, is the operating umbrella for KSL’s TV, radio and internet outlets.
“Our two companies are uniquely aligned, sharing deep roots in Utah and a focus on serving local audiences with a commitment to high-quality content and operations,” Bonneville’s president, Darrell Brown, said in a statement.” We look forward to bringing The Zone Sports Network together with KSL NewsRadio, KSL TV, and KSLSports.com to create a new Utah sports powerhouse.”
The Zone Sports Network was previously owned and operated by The Larry H. Miller Group, which also owned the Utah Jazz. The LHM Group agreed to sell the Jazz to Ryan and Ashley Smith as principal owners in October 2020.
In a separate sale, LHM sold The Zone station to Smith Entertainment Group, a transaction that required FCC approval. That approval came in May this year and the transfer of the radio station was then complete.
The Smiths now own most of the sports entities previously under the LHM umbrella: the Utah Jazz, Vivint Arena, the Salt Lake City Stars, Jazz Gaming and The Zone Sports Network.
