Weber State softball takes 2 from Sacramento State, inching close to title

By Brett Hein - | Apr 29, 2022

OGDEN — As the Big Sky softball schedule cycles through its rounds, it seems every team Weber State faces is in second place and hoping to put together a series win to challenge the Wildcats at the top.

Friday, that was Sacramento State. But the Wildcats claimed both games at Wildcat Softball Field to move to 34-10 overall and 12-1 in the Big Sky.

That knocked the Hornets (25-22, 9-5) down to a second-place tie with Portland State (25-16, 9-5). And because Idaho State (23-22, 7-7) split with PSU on Friday, the Wildcats are inches away from their sixth consecutive regular-season championship (fifth outright).

Weber State will play for the regular-season title at noon Saturday in the finale against Sacramento State — though, absent a win there, WSU would need only one win in its three-game series at Portland State next week to accomplish the feat.

WSU 7, SAC 4

In Friday’s first game, Mika Chong hit an RBI double in the third to set up McKell McCuiston for her 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot to put WSU up 4-0. A Faith Hoe sacrifice fly made it 5-0 in the fourth.

Alondra Mejia tripled in two runs to start a Sac State rally in the sixth inning. Two more singles made it 5-4 and Arissa Henderson issued an intentional walk to Sac slugger Lewa Day to load the bases with two outs.

It paid off. Henderson got Samantha Parish to ground hard to Emily Ruhl at third base, where she stepped on her bag to end the inning.

WSU got insurance runs back in the bottom of the sixth when Hoe singled in KC Whiting and, with no cut off to the plate, Hoe took second and the throw to second allowed Mia Rushton to slide into the plate for the final 7-4 margin.

WSU 5, SAC 0

Mariah Ramirez pitched a three-hit, complete-game shutout and got some superb defense behind her to win Friday’s second game. That included Rushton making a diving catch over her shoulder in center field for the first out in the top of the seventh.

WSU got on the board when Ruhl doubled and Whiting singled in the run to make it 1-0 after two innings.

Rushton then lined an RBI triple in the fourth and scored on a Hoe groundout, making it 3-0. Chloe Camarero followed with a single to right and, possibly intentionally, got hung up rounding first base. It allowed a run to score and Camarero took third on the eventual play at the plate. Camarero then scored on a passed ball for the final 5-0 tally.
