Weber State men’s golfer Hayden Banz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Utah State Amateur men’s golf tournament Thursday at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway.

Banz, a sophomore and alumnus of East High in Salt Lake City, defeated Utah Valley golfer Dylan Naylor 4 and 3 in their round-of-16 match. Banz was 4 up after nine holes and 5 up after 11.

After Naylor won the 14th hole to cut Banz’s lead to 3 up, Banz won No. 15 to end the match. Banz will contest his quarterfinal match on Friday morning, with the possibility of playing in a semifinal match later in the day should he win the quarterfinal.

Banz needed 22 holes to win his match against current BYU golfer Max Brenchley in the round of 32. Banz was 2 up through 13 holes before Brenchley won two of the next three to tie the match.

Banz faces Park City native Jackson Holman in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. Friday. Live scoring for the match can be found on www.uga.org.

Weber State golfer Brody Childs fell 3 and 1 against John Owen (Mountain View GC) in their round-of-16 match. Childs led 2 up after eight holes, then Owen won four of the next five holes to take the advantage.

In the round of 32 earlier Thursday, Childs defeated St. George high schooler Lincoln Markham 6 and 5. Childs had a 5-up lead after seven holes and pushed it to 7 up after 11 holes.

Braxton Watts (Farmington High, University of Utah) lost 3 and 2 to Cal freshman Simon Kwon in the round of 16. Kwon was 5 up with five holes left to play, then Watts won two holes in a row to hold off elimination before the two players scored a 3 on hole No. 16, which ended the match.

Watts beat Darrin Overson (Timpanogos GC) 1 up in the round of 32. Watts won the final three holes of the match and shot 68 in his round to Overson’s 69.

Bryson Hirabayashi (Clearfield High, Westminster College) lost 5 and 3 against David Timmins (Willow Creek GC). Hirabayashi was 2 up after four holes, then Timmins won three of the next five holes and finished the match by winning four of five holes.

Cole Ogden, a Syracuse High and BYU alumnus who won the 2013 State Amateur, lost 2 and 1 to Jackson Holman (Glenwild GC) in the round of 32. After tying on the first hole, Holman won the second hole and led the rest of the match.
