Sports briefs: Ogden Raptors announce local tryout; Weber State makes admin shuffle

Entering their second year of independent play, the Ogden Raptors announced a second local tryout for professional baseball hopefuls.

The Raptors will host a tryout on May 14 at Lindquist Field, run by manager Kash Beauchamp, pitching coach Les Lancaster and bullpen coach Evan Parker.

Players with no more than three years of professional baseball experience can register online at tickets.ogdenraptors.com. Questions can be emailed to players@ogden-raptors.com.

The event is a one-day, showcase-style, open tryout camp. According to a news release, players will be tested in a variety of skills, including the 60-yard dash, throwing, fielding, hitting and pitching. Pitching will take place in the bullpens.

Interested players should note that they are responsible for all of their own gear, including gloves, bats, pants, cleats, etc. Only wood bats will be allowed.

The 2022 season begins May 25.

MORGAN NAMED WSU ADMIN

Volleyball assistant coach Kayla Morgan was named interim assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator at Weber State, the school announced last week.

Megan Thunell left the role to become interim assistant vice president for human resources at the university.

Morgan, a native of Kaysville, has been an assistant volleyball coach for seven seasons.

PETERSON HIRED AWAY

Utah men’s basketball assistant coach Eric Peterson was hired away Tuesday by South Dakota, USD announced.

Peterson, who has been an assistant coach under Craig Smith at South Dakota, Utah State and Utah since 2014, was known as a top recruiter for the Utes. He’ll be USD’s fifth head coach since becoming a DI program in 2009.

BYU SCHEDULE FINAL

BYU announced its finalized 2022 football schedule Tuesday, the final independent schedule before the Cougars join the Big 12 in 2023.

BYU will face five Power 5 opponents, including two at home, will play two in-state schools, and will face Notre Dame in Las Vegas.

Sept. 24: vs. Wyoming

Sept. 29: vs. Utah State

Oct. 8: vs. Notre Dame (in Las Vegas)
