Togisala, who is paralyzed from the waist down after a skiing accident in February 2022, shot 16-over-par in the three-round tournament to win the seated category championship. He beat Dennis Walters, a renowned paraplegic golfer, for first place.

Togisala carded an 8-over 80 in Wednesday’s third round and was 1-over over his final nine holes. That followed an opening-round 82 and a second-round, 2-under-par round of 70 that included four birdies.

He was one of seven players competing in the seated category of the tournament and was the only Utahn in the event. The tournament was held at the famous Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, on its “Course No. 6.”

Togisala finished 17th overall in the tournament, which had men’s and women’s categories for arm impairment, intellectual impairment, leg impairment, multiple limb amputees, neurological impairment and short stature.

For the men’s seated category, the course is set up at 5,100 yards in length instead of its maximum length of 7,053 yards.

Kipp Popert of England shot 2-under overall to win the men’s tournament. Ryanne Jackson of Florida won the women’s overall title with a three-round score of 9-over.

As previously reported by the Standard-Examiner, Togisala golfs with the aid of a single-seat golf cart that is essentially a large power chair with a stand-on-command mechanism.
