OGDEN — Eight Northern Utah golfers swung their way into the Round of 64 during the final day of stroke play at the 126th annual state amateur championship Monday at Ogden Golf and County Club.

After two warm days on the links, 16 names — including Box Elder High alum Dallin Wheatley at 8-under — are tied for 62nd and await Wednesday morning’s playoff to determine the final field for match play set for an 8 a.m. tee time.

Davis High alum Cole Ponich (BYU), a course-low 65 in the first round Monday, nestled into 7-under for second place over the two days. Layton High alum David Liechty (Utah Tech) joined Ponich near the top of the board, sliding into fourth at 5-under after the second round.

Syracuse alum Cole Ogden and Bonneville alum Parker Bunn broke into the top 15 with a pair of strong second-round performances. Ogden improved by a stroke to finish 1-under in a tie for 12th place and Bunn, who’s committed to Oklahoma State, tied for 15th with Bonneville alum Hayden Banz (Weber State) at 1-over.

Elsewhere on the table, Weber State’s Brendan Thomas tied for 26th by shooting 3-over to beat the scores of Bonneville alum Carsen Dopp (T34) and Box Elder alum Dallin Wheatley (T62).

Golfers with local ties who didn’t qualify for match play are: Rand Sargent (Davis) 10-over, Jake Godfrey (Davis) 10-over, Cole Taylor (Davis) 10-over, Jacob Randall (Layton) 12-over, Jon Auxier (Ogden) 12-over, Brennan Coburn (Layton) 17-over, Joshua Summerhays (Davis) 18-over, and Dakota Buckway (Bonneville) 19-over.
