OGDEN — The Ogden Jets football team — a second-year, post-high school team — took on a program in Air Force Prep that has been playing junior college level competition since 1961 on Saturday.

And the disparity of experience and development showed, as AFP raced to a huge first-half lead and coasted to a 36-6 victory over the Jets at Weber State’s Stewart Stadium.

“To get a chance to play in this environment, in this beautiful stadium was awesome for them,” Ogden coach Jamie Martin said. “This was a great experience for them. This is where they’re trying to get to, the next level of football. They’re trying to get on film with us, compete, show themselves.”

Ogden (0-2) never got untracked offensively, with several breakdowns along multiple position groups.

“We’ve got to get better on the offensive line and our quarterback making plays. Those are two positions we need to keep working on; get the reps and improving,” Martin said. “It’s frustrating … we have to be patient and keep making progress. That’s what everyone’s here for.”

Ogden Jets kicker and Farmington High alum Gavin Jensen (23) attempts a field goal against Air Force Prep on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

The Jets trailed 26-0 at the half, but the defense only gave up a field goal and a touchdown in the second half.

“We didn’t change anything. (Defense) played well the first half. We just didn’t give them a break (on offense), so they kind of got worn down at the end,” Martin said.

Air Force Prep padded its lead with a 31-yard field goal by Justin Ludovico midway through the third quarter, making it 29-0 before Ogden finally got on the board.

Kanalu Kunewa recovered an Air Force Prep fumble at the 16-yard line and four plays later, former Farmington High kicker Gavin Jensen banged a 37-yard field goal through the uprights for Ogden’s first points of the game at the 1:42 mark.

“I was trying to do my job, man. I know everyone out here on the team is doing their job and I need to do mine,” Jensen said. “I went out there and wanted to put some points on the board for my team and help them feel a little bit better and give them some life.”

Jensen booted his second field goal, a 32-yarder, early in the fourth quarter, and Ogden moved to within 29-6 with 11:37 remaining.

The two field goals capped a storybook trip for Jensen, who graduated from Farmington in 2022.

“I played all four years, but went on a church mission and returned the first of August. My high school coach reached out to (the Jets); they were looking for a kicker and I was ready,” Jensen said. “This opportunity came up and I jumped on it. I grew up a soccer player … just love to kick.”

Mason Walsh scored on an 8-yard touchdown run on AFP’s ensuing possession for the final points of the game.

Air Force Prep (1-1) dominated the first half, scoring two touchdowns each in the first and second quarters, to lead 26-0 at the break.

The Huskies alternated quarterbacks between Evan Medders and Josiah Bushnell to post their four touchdowns, while the Jets also switched between quarterbacks Jaret Scott (Clearfield High alum) and Dylan Horsley with dramatically different results to Air Force Prep.

On offense, the most plays the Jets ran in one possession was five, and they had they had four three-and-outs.

Two other possessions ended in interceptions by Air Force Prep.

“We planned to play two. Jaret is our starter as long as he’s healthy; we planned to get another in the game at some point,” Martin said. “We wanted to get Dylan in this game. These guys are here to get reps and progress and you can’t do that sitting on the bench.”

Four Air Force Prep possessions began on the Ogden side of the 50-yard line, with three of those short fields resulting in touchdowns.

Medders rushed for two 1-yard TDs in the first quarter for the Huskies and Noah McNair had a 6-yard touchdown run and Temitayo Ashadele scored from three yards out in the second stanza.

Ogden went 2-8 in its inaugural season and Martin gauged Saturday’s game performance based on last year’s results; the Jets lost 45-3 at AFP last season.

“We were definitely bad, but that’s a great team. We’ve improved enough to compete with them compared to last year. I stress, I don’t care what it says on the scoreboard, we’re here to play and compete on every play,” Martin said. “They’re so physical up front and solid at every position, while we need to improve on the two categories I mentioned. We’re trying to get there. We’re not there yet.

“They’ve been doing this a long time, not just two years. Decades.”
