Preston Summerhays watches the flight of his ball during the Korn Ferry Tour Utah Championship on Thursday, July 31, at Ogden Golf and Country Club in South Ogden.

Summerhays means golf in Northern Utah, and it was time to show out Friday.

For both Summerhayses.

The elder Daniel Summerhays tied for the best score of round two with a 7-under 63 while Preston Summerhays went 6-under to flirt with the top 10 at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Utah Championship held at Ogden Golf and Country Club.

Weber High alum Connor Howe, meanwhile, stacked a solid 67 to his 65 from Thursday and is 8-under overall, tied for eighth place with Daniel Summerhays.

That means Howe and the elder Summerhays are paired up for Saturday’s third round at 2:10 p.m.

Overall, both Summerhays players, Howe, Davis High alum Cole Ponich and Ogden native Mitchell Schow made the cut and will play through the weekend in the event that’s part of the PGA Tour’s undercard circuit.

Daniel Summerhays got to work quickly Friday with five birdies on the front nine and played bogey-free golf to surge into contention. Preston Summerhays bogeyed holes 1 and 18 but racked up eight birdies in between.

Howe streaked down the stretch, playing the front nine last with birdies on holes 1, 4 and 5, but a bogey on seven kept him from climbing farther.

Ponich bogeyed twice on the front nine and slid toward the cut line for a moment, but birdied holes 11, 13 and 15 to finish 3-under on the day. That puts him at 7-under overall, part of a big group tied for 12th that includes Preston Summerhays.

Schow was seemingly destined to miss the cut, eagling on hole 3 but otherwise bogeying twice on the front nine and also logging a double bogey on hole 7.

But Schow (who later moved to Park City and golfed at the University of Utah) finished with an unreal rally, carding four birdies on the final five holes for a 31 on the back nine. That made Schow 3-under for the tournament, right at the cut line to make the weekend.

Weber State alum Hayden Banz, the first WSU golfer to appear in the Korn Ferry Tour, didn’t record a birdie Friday and the cut line rose above him after he bogeyed three times on the back nine. He missed the cut at 1-over after Friday’s 73.

American Taylor Montgomery (Las Vegas) enters the weekend at 14-under with a two-shot lead at the top. Belgian Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Canadian Etienne Papineau are in second at 12-under.

For other Utahns, Peter Kuest joined Schow at 3-under, just making the cut, while amateur Kihei Akina missed the cut at 1-under.

TV coverage of the final two rounds airs on the GOLF Channel, going from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday and 5-7 p.m. on Sunday.
