Kaysville native Daniel Summerhays, left greets North Ogden native Connor Howe following the third round of the Utah Championship on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, at Ogden Golf and Country Club in South Ogden.

SOUTH OGDEN — As five Northern Utahns turn the corner into the final round of the Utah Championship on Sunday, Kaysville native Daniel Summerhays has himself a top 10 seat as the PGA’s Korn Ferry Tour wraps its first-ever stop at Ogden Golf and Country Club.

The 41-year-old shaved four strokes off his game on Saturday to finish 12-under and remain tied for eighth overall. Summerhays entered the round tied with Weber High alum and third-year pro Connor Howe, who dropped a stroke for 7-under and enters Sunday tied for 41st.

Summerhays posted a 4-1 birdie-bogey ratio through the front 9, picking up another pair of birdies on holes 12 and 14 before the southern tip of a nearby storm introduced erratic winds through the final stretch of the round. The BYU alum described the late-round curveball of not just the weather, but the increasingly dry conditions as the day carried on.

“The last four or five holes it got pretty nasty,” Summerhays said.

“It started to dry out, the greens got a little bouncy, which is what you want, honestly. That’s how it should be. I’m excited for tomorrow’s prospects of how the course is going to play, but the wind kicked up (and) I said this inside, the meteorologist, sometimes they get it wrong, but today, unfortunately, they got it exactly right.”

Summerhays and Howe each bogeyed 16, but each posted two par putts heading out the door. Howe four times on Saturday, including a double-bogey on the eighth hole, diminished his three uninterrupted birdies on the front 9.

An 18-year veteran of pro golf, Summerhays tipped his cap to Howe and how the North Ogden native played during the third round.

“I loved how he handled himself out there,” Summerhays said of Howe. “He’s miles ahead of a lot of pros, even though this is his third year as a pro. He’s miles ahead as far as his demeanor and how he handles himself out there.”

But, then again, two Summerhayses are on the scene this week.

Preston Summerhays, a Farmington native and Daniel’s nephew, improved by three strokes on Saturday for 10-under and sits tied for 16th overall heading into Sunday’s final round. Preston birdied holes 4, 5, 12 and 14 on Saturday, bogeying just twice on the afternoon.

Their hopes of a family feud round on Sunday appear dashed but Daniel, speaking with reporters following his round on Saturday, lauded the experience he’s shared with Preston in their home state this weekend.

“Preston, he’s played great so far this week,” Daniel Summerhays said. “I was hoping we’d get a weekend pairing, but it looks like it’s not going to happen. Hopefully, we’ll get the birds flowing tomorrow. I’m excited for him and all of his future success that he’s going to have. He’s an incredible player, and he and his dad, boy, they’ve worked so hard over the years to get to this point, so I’m excited to be Uncle Dan out here on tour.”

Recalling the start to his round, Daniel Summerhays shared the modest moment he felt during his first tee shot on Saturday.

“I turned around, just looked at everybody, and just felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for all the family and friends out, people supporting,” Daniel Summerhays said. “To play with Connor today made it even more special. This is his home course where he grew up, and there were a lot of people cheering him on. That just made our crowd a pretty special thing.”

A second pro with Farmington ties, Cole Ponich, entered Saturday tied for 12th alongside the younger Summerhays at 7-under. The BYU alum bogeyed his second hole of the day but never again as Ponich birdied holes 3, 12 and 14 to rest 9-under and tied for 24th after his third round.

With the earliest start of all, Ogden native Mitchell Schow carded an exceptionally strong day, improving from 3-under to 7-under in his 18 holes.

Schow birdied holes 2 and 4, posted back-to-back bogeys on 7 and 8, and capped the front 9 with a birdie. On the back, Schow birdied holes 12, 14 and 16 to finish Saturday tied with Howe for 41st overall.

Americans Robby Shelton and Taylor Montgomery lead the field at 16-under through three rounds; South Korean Bio Kim sits 14-under in third overall.

TV coverage of the final round airs on the GOLF Channel from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday.
