OGDEN — The first season of Ogden Gunners baseball ended a game shy of a Northern Utah League title on Tuesday night, as the Smithfield Blue Sox claimed Game 2 of the championship series 6-5 in extras at Lindquist Field.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Bear River alum and SLCC commit Gehrig Marble powered a two-run homer to right field to even the board 4-all and force an extra inning. In the 1oth, Smithfield’s Zach Hansen answered with a two-RBI double to Marble for a 6-4 lead; Hansen walked in an Ogden run in the bottom side, but ultimately held on to clinch the series.
An unfortunate finish to Ogden’s inaugural season under coach Kyle Bubak, who’s also in charge of Ogden High School’s baseball program, hardly detracts from their August run, which saw the Gunners open the month winning four consecutive games, reach the league championship and finish 5-3 this month following a 4-12 July.
