LOGAN — Northern Utah was well represented in the quarterfinal round of the Utah Men’s State Amateur on Friday at Logan Country Club, as Layton’s own David Liechty and incoming Farmington senior Jack Summerhays ate up a quarter of the top seeds comprising the morning playoff.

Liechty, the No. 3 seed, loosened and rebought a 2-up lead on No. 11 Summerhays throughout Friday’s 10 a.m. start. Liechty ultimately hung on for a 2-up victory after Summerhays extended the match to a full 18 holes with a par-putt on the 16th hole and a birdie on the 17th.

The front nine ended with Summerhays tying the stroke card 34-all and the 17-year-old Phoenix star managed a 1-up lead on Liechty through the 11th hole. Liechty reclaimed his second 2-up lead of the match on the 15th hole, but conceded the 17th to Summerhays late for a wirey finish.

With a win, Liechty advanced to face No. 2 Bowen Mauss, who’s committed to Arizona State, for the semifinals. Summerhays exits the tournament with his best performance, finishing 3-1 with a first-ever quarterfinals appearance.

“Jack didn’t miss a shot all day,” Liechty said. “I think he’s improved a lot since the last time I played with him, because it’s been about two years. It’s a great accomplishment for Jack (and) I just barely snuck it in.”

Trailing by one after the 10th hole, Liechty said the 12th hole, and a seemingly poor start off the tee, ended up providing him just the “strip of grass” he needed to find the green and level things with his opponent.

“I hit a bad drive and it ended up being OK,” Liechty said. “I took advantage of that and then kind of just rode that momentum. (Jack) hit a couple slightly-off shots, but I just needed birdies to beat him, so I got a couple of those coming in.”

Liechty and Summerhays, former high school adversaries, matched up after a combined 6-0 run in match play to meet up. Thursday saw Liechty defeat Weber State alum Brendan Thomas, the No. 51 seed and a 2024 semifinalist, to reach the medal rounds.

Summerhays stacked wins over No. 54 Ryan Barber (2 and 1), No. 43 J.J. Tomsick (6 and 5) and No. 38 Lucas Schone (3 and 2), the younger brother of Noah Schone, the No. 1 seed, to reach a milestone round with Liechty.

To go out forcing a full 18 holes, Summerhays said it’s been his best tournament trip yet.

“Man, it was the best finish I’ve ever had,” Summerhays said. “I honestly didn’t feel like I played spectacular either, which shows that I’m just getting better and better. I felt like I could compete with anyone out there. David’s such a good player, he made like one mistake all day. I needed to make birdies and unfortunately it didn’t happen at the end there, but it’s all good.”

He continued:

“It’s been a blessing,” Summerhays said. “I want to thank the UGA because it’s been awesome. It feels like a major, man. (Logan) is so pure. … I love match play, and I feel like I make a lot of pars and kind of par people to death, but it was fun.”

The 36-hole championship match, determined Thursday evening following the semifinals, is slated for a 9:30 a.m. Saturday start in Logan.
