Marque Denmon will take the mic and sound his pipes when the Jazz take the court this season, the team announced Wednesday. The Texas native takes over for Dan Roberts, the only PA announcer in Jazz history, given Roberts’ retirement after 46 seasons and more than 2,000 games.
“I’m thrilled to join the Utah Jazz organization and continue the amazing legacy of bringing energy and excitement to Delta Center every night,” Denmon said in a news release. “Jazz fans are legendary for their electricity and I look forward to experiencing that, getting into the Jazz basketball atmosphere, and doing my part to make every game an unforgettable experience for fans of all ages.
“That connection won’t stop inside Delta Center either. I’m eager to get out in the community, meet the people who make Utah so special, and truly become a part of the Utah Jazz basketball family.”
Denmon has been the public address announcer for Auburn University men’s basketball, the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA, the Greenville Drive minor league baseball team, one of the announcers for the Harlem Globetrotters, and has called college baseball conference tournaments in the south for the last 10-plus years.
Denmon told Holly Rowe on her “Front Rowe” podcast published Wednesday that he had two offers from NBA teams for this role but chose Utah because of the team’s sellout streak and the fans’ knowledge. He called some games at the Salt Lake City Summer League this year, he said, and watched as a spectator when he wasn’t on the mic.
“I listened in to the chatter of the people, and that’s why I picked up on that it’s a great place and space,” Denmon said. “Utah is that kind of marketplace, and I feel delighted and excited, and very honored, to come behind someone like Dan Roberts to fill this post and position because it’s a very high honor.”
Denmon told Rowe that while he’s announced several sports and also has voice acting credits, his role as a father is the most fulfilling in his life.
“Marque brings incredible experience and a unique energy to this role. We’re excited for fans to hear him this season,” said Chris Barney of Smith Entertainment Group in a news release. “His ability to connect with crowds and deliver the excitement of live sports is exactly what we are looking for. We’re thrilled to welcome him to Utah and introduce him to one of the loudest and most passionate fanbases in professional sports.”
Fans can meet Denmon in one week. When Utah opens its preseason schedule on Oct. 8 in Houston (a 6 p.m. MDT tipoff), the Jazz will host a meet-and-greet in Midvale. From 5:45 p.m. until halftime, Denmon will meet fans at Mid City Pub and Grill.
