21 on 21: Viewmont trying to continue upward trajectory
This is the final installment in the Standard-Examiner’s 21 on 21 series, previewing all 21 of the area high school football teams in 21 days.
BOUNTIFUL — Three wins may not sound like a lot, but for the Viewmont High football team, it was as many wins as the Vikings tallied in 2012 and 2013 combined.
Viewmont coach Scott Ditty recognizes the accomplishment but also recognizes how much work still has to be done.
“Although that was a big improvement, we still have a long way to go in building a championship program,” Ditty said.
As the Vikings prepare for the 2015 season, the focus is on not just being able to compete, but being able to win close games. Viewmont lost to Bountiful, Northridge, Weber and Syracuse by a combined 28 points a year ago.
“Our expectations are very high so we need to get over the hump and learn how to win those close games by not accepting anything less,” Ditty said. “We are working this year with the idea that good isn’t good enough.”
Viewmont returns four returning starters on both offense and defense this year. Top returning players include linebacker/tight end Dustin Mathews, defensive back/wide receiver Hunter Burt, running back/wide receiver Jared Barnum, defensive back/wide receiver Tanner Avei, defensive back/tight end Scott Young, offensive/defensive lineman Hunter Welch, offensive/defensive lineman Hayden Stubbs, offensive/defensive lineman Matt Thiel and quarterback Cole Huish.
In addition to the returning players, Ditty acknowledges his team “will be relying heavy on a talented junior class who won their region championship as sophomores.”
Other potential impact players include running back Cort George, tight end/linebacker Chandler Stafford, wide receiver/running back Jacob Barnum, wide receiver/running back Nephi Kahaloakaa, offensive/defensive lineman Kevin Calobeer and offensive/defensive lineman Josh Childs.
