Boys basketball: Fremont’s 2nd-half push hands Bonneville its 1st loss

By Bob Judson - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Dec 30, 2021

PLAIN CITY — Fremont sophomore shooting guard Hunter Hansen’s father sat behind the scorer’s table a couple of rows from the floor and predicted the Silverwolves game against Bonneville would be a “bloodbath.”

His thought was based on the fact that Fremont coach Corey Melaney and Laker leader Kyle Bullinger ran similar styles because they had coached together for three years after Bullinger left Weber State and knew each other well.

He had no way of knowing that Bonneville’s Jacob Williams would have to leave the game due to a knee abrasion that sent blood trickling down into his sock and would have to come out midway through the second quarter.

Or that Fremont would be patient and oft times held the ball for a minute or more due to Bonneville’s stingy defense before taking a shot or losing the ball on a turnover.

In the end, the Silverwolves threw caution to the wind in the second half and blew the doors off with a 21-4 run that resulted in a non-region, 58-46, come-from-behind win over the Lakers.

“Basketball is a game of runs. If a team goes on one, you have to answer back and go on your own run” Hansen the younger said.

Bonneville’s lead ballooned to 29-21 in the third quarter when Koy Dixon hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game, but then Fremont caught fire.

Beginning with a David Calvert drive down the lane at the 4:47 mark and ending with Hansen’s turnaround jump shot less than a minute later, Fremont took a 30-29 lead with 3:50 left in the period.

The run was 18-4 early in the fourth quarter when Hansen knocked down a 3-pointer with 6 minutes to play, and the surge wrapped up when Braden Flinders buried a 3 with 5:46 remaining.

Joseph Tesch stopped the bleeding for the Lakers with a rebound basket, but Hansen answered on a layup inside halfway through the final frame.

“Depending on who’s guarding me, I can take it on the perimeter or go inside,” Hansen said.

Calvert led Fremont (5-3) with 15 points, many down the stretch to keep the Lakers at bay, Hansen had 14 with a pair of 3’s and Dakota Argyle also added double digits with 12.

Bonneville led 6-4 late in the first quarter before Hansen made his first 3-pointer in the last seconds. He totaled all seven Fremont points for the 7-6 edge at the break.

“Just play my game; if I’m open, shoot it,” Hansen said. “If not, make plays for my teammates.”

Fremont struggled in the first quarter and, as a team, only took seven shots while a tough Bonneville defense set the tone early.

“They’re physical; we’re physical, so it was a battle. They play tough defense. They know some of our sets, we know some of their sets, so we play a lot alike,” Hansen said. “We just came and played our game. They weren’t giving us many good looks so we waited; didn’t want to force it.”

Thursday’s loss was the first all year for the Lakers (8-1), a 5A school that has played four 6A teams this season.

“We wanted to beat them. We watched a lot of film and studied them so we could get that win,” Hansen said.

Dixon netted 14 points to lead the Lakers and Williams scored 10, playing the rest of the game with a knee wrap that required further attention in the hall outside the gym after the game. Tesch checked in with eight points for the Lakers.

“Obviously Kyle puts his own spin on it, but there’s a lot of familiarity with us,” Melaney said. “I probably steal more from him than he does from me. It was friendly out there, but you want to beat your friends.”
