Prep roundup: Layton soccer wins in extra time, setting up playoff match with Davis

LAYTON — Erin Bailey converted a penalty kick in extra time as No. 6 Layton High girls soccer downed No. 11 Corner Canyon 3-2 in the 6A second round to advance to the state quarterfinals.

Bailey scored the Lancers’ (12-5) first goal, assisted by Reese Robinson, then LHS took a 2-1 lead in the second half when Kristen Moss converted Brook Nelson’s rebounded shot. Corner Canyon tied the game with 30 seconds left to send it to extra time.

DAVIS 3, WESTLAKE 0

KAYSVILLE — Davis cruised to a second-round playoff win against No. 14 Westlake with goals from three different players.

Avery Thal, Brooklyn Phongsavath and Tessa Franks scored for the No. 3 Darts (14-2), while Phongsavath, Kayla Wade and Rachel Bodkin assisted one goal each. Taygan Sill got the shutout in goal.

Davis will host Region 1 rival Layton on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

RIVERTON 4, FREMONT 1

RIVERTON — Olivia Van Orden scored in the first half on a Marli Sanford assist as No. 15 Fremont fell at No. 2 Riverton (16-1) in the 6A second round.

The Silverwolves end the season with a 9-9 mark.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Ogden High boys and Morgan High girls cross country teams rolled to Region 13 titles at Tuesday’s region cross country championship races in Millcreek.

The Ogden boys placed six runners in the top seven places and seven in the top 10, with Jack Blodgett winning the race by nearly 22 seconds over teammate Jake Peterson as the Tigers won the region title with 18 points to Morgan’s 53.

In the girls race, Morgan had the top four finishers and five of the top six as MHS finished with 16 points, way in front of Ogden’s 39.

Trojans senior Kate Heywood won in dominant fashion with a time of 19:04.5, which was a full 1 minute, 22 seconds ahead of second place.

Aubrey Neilson led Davis (12-15, 4-5) with 14 kills and 10 digs. Aimee Larsen served seven aces.

SYRACUSE 3, FARMINGTON 0

FARMINGTON — Syracuse won at Farmington 25-14, 25-11, 25-15.

Hailee Garcia served five aces and dished out 29 assists for Syracuse (20-2, 9-0 Region 1). Andie Thomas tallied 13 kills, Mia Thompson had three blocks and Kambree Rodriguez added 18 digs

Farmington (6-12, 4-6) did not report stats.

BOX ELDER 3, BONNEVILLE 0

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder swept Bonneville 25-23, 25-19, 25-22

Box Elder (14-11, 2-6 Region 5) did not report stats.

Kelsie Heslop paced Bonneville (9-17, 0-8) with 12 kills and 14 digs. Evelyn Park tallied three kills and three blocks. Peighton Summers added two kills, four aces, 25 assists and 10 digs.

HUNTER 3, ROY 0

ROY — Nelly Arenas had 15 digs and Jayna Rogers hit seven kills as Roy (11-7, 7-2 Region 2) dropped a straight-sets match to Hunter, who in turn clinched a share of the Region 2 championship.
