Nelson’s golden goal sends Layton girls soccer past Davis, into 6A semifinals

Layton High soccer players celebrate after beating Davis 1-0 in the state quarterfinals on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021.KAYSVILLE — Through 90-plus minutes of scoreless soccer, Layton High’s girls soccer team had one shot on goal in Thursday’s state quarterfinal match at Davis. It was a shot from the left by Erin Bailey that went right into Davis keeper Taygan Sill’s arms.
The Darts, through that same amount of time, had zero shots on goal. That’s the thing about these types of playoff soccer games in October: there’s usually only one golden scoring opportunity in the whole game and on a cold, cloudy day, that opportunity fell to the Lancers.
Senior midfielder Brook Nelson turned that golden chance into a golden goal, a goal in the second period of extra time that lifted the Lancers past Davis 1-0 and into next week’s 6A state semifinals.
From the center of the penalty box, Nelson crashed to the goal and one-timed Bailey’s corner kick past Sill to wrap up the win on what was a third corner kick in succession for the Lancers (13-5).
“So excited. The energy even before the game was awesome, and now it’s just like I’m so happy and so excited,” Nelson said.
Layton, the 6A tournament’s No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 Riverton at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Juan Diego High School in Draper.
It took all three corner kicks Thursday to get a shot attempt, but the third time was the charm for the aspect of soccer that has a pretty simple theory behind it.
“Just throw your whole body in there and hope for the best,” Nelson said about playing corner kicks.
“Crash the goal and hopefully you can put something in,” LHS coach Tara Ferrin said.
Davis (14-3) and Layton split their regular-season series this year as the Darts won the outright Region 1 title with just four goals allowed in 12 region games, and five overall this season.
Nelson’s goal, her first of the season, was just the sixth goal Davis allowed all year.
After a first half with zero shots on goal, 50-50 possession and a couple threatening crosses that each goalkeeper handled, Thursday’s quarterfinal had all the makings of a penalty shootout or a game that would have just one good scoring chance.
Both defenses held firm through regulation and the first period of extra time, despite each team trying time after time to get through balls up to forwards. Each time, for both teams, a defender intercepted the pass if the ball wasn’t already going out.
“They did not want to give them a single run over the top. They put a head on it, they put a foot on it, they put a chest on it, whatever they could get on it,” Ferrin said.
Ferrin said the Lancers started to pass better in extra time and controlled possession more. That turned into the first of what would be three corner kicks in succession.
Layton’s postgame celebration took two forms: a mob on the field among the team and some students, and then the team celebrating in a huddle afterward because of something Ferrin told them.
“I said, ‘Hey, we got practice on Friday,’ and they just erupted,” Ferrin said.
The Lancers are one of four teams left playing for the big state title trophy. They were pretty happy about that.
“Who wouldn’t feel good, right? We’re going to the semis, they just beat Davis in double overtime, I mean they played their hearts out,” Ferrin said.
