Prep football roundup: Ogden, Syracuse claim 1st-round playoff wins

MANTI — No. 9 Ogden High football scored 27 straight points to turn a 21-7 deficit into a 34-21 lead and held off No. 8 Manti for a road win in the 3A first round, winning 34-28 on Friday evening.

Chet Colvin got Ogden on the board on a 75-yard kick return to tie the score 7-7 with 4:35 left in the first quarter. Yahir Morales scored on a 5-yard run with 1:13 left in the first half, then Ogden got the ball back and Adam Wilson hit a 31-yard field goal as time expired to make the score 21-17 for Manti (3-7) at the half.

Colvin gave the Tigers the lead in the third quarter, scoring on rushes of 81 and 3 yards. A Wilson 34-yard field goal gave Ogden its largest lead of 34-21 with 2:15 left in the game.

Manti (3-7) scored with 2 seconds left for the final margin. Ogden will travel to face No. 1 Juab in the 3A quarterfinals.

SYRACUSE 33, PLEASANT GROVE 7

SYRACUSE — No. 12 Syracuse led 19-0 at the half in a win over No. 21 Pleasant Grove (1-10) in the 6A first round.

Chandler Christensen scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter to get Syracuse (7-4) on the board. In the second quarter, Corbin Bodily converted a 22-yard field goal and Jake Hopkins tossed a 16-yard scoring strike to Noah Yeates. Bodily booted a 49-yard field goal as the first half expired.

Brevin Hamblin rushed for a 13-yard score and Hopkins hit Christensen from 4 yards out to cap the Titans’ scoring.

Pleasant Grove scored on a 23-yard pass in the final seconds.

Syracuse advances to play at No. 5 Mountain Ridge next week in the second round

LAYTON 24, HUNTER 10

LAYTON — No. 13 Layton scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take control in a 6A first round win over No. 20 Hunter (3-7).

Layton (6-4) will play at No. 4 Weber next week in the second round.

At press time, no other information was reported for this game.

BOX ELDER 22, TOOELE 14

TOOELE — Daxton Sumko scored all three touchdowns to lead No. 24 Box Elder to a 5A first-round upset win at No. 9 Tooele.

After Tooele (7-3) took a 6-0 lead, Cooper Stevenson tossed a 4-yard pass to Sumko and converted a pass for the two-point PAT to give Box Elder (4-7) an 8-6 halftime lead.

Sumko scooped up a Tooele fumble and returned it 28 yards for a score at the 9:34 mark in the third quarter. Tooele cut the lead to 15-14 on a touchdown and two-point conversion with 8:51 left in the game. Sumko gave the Bees an insurance score on a 19-yard run with 1:04 left.

Box Elder will play at No. 8 Timpanogos in the second round.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 84, MONTICELLO 0

LAYTON — No. 6 Layton Christian used a bevy of big plays, including two punt returns and two interception returns for touchdowns, to blow out No. 11 Monticello (2-9) in the 1A first round and broke a record of more than 100 years.

Jessaia Moala scored four rushing touchdowns, of 6, 30, 73 and 42 yards. Malik Johnson caught two touchdown passes — a 27-yarder from Zoram Petelo and a 22-yard strike from Tucker Prescott — returned a punt 60 yards for a score, and returned an interception 40 yards for points.

Manu Vaitaki scored on runs of 11 and 9 yards. Ilai Jared Tagidugu returned an interception 40 yards for a score and Adriano de Castro Filho took a punt 30 yards to the endzone.

The 84-point margin of victory breaks a playoff record set in 1919 when East beat Payson 79-0 in the state championship game.

Layton Christian (7-4) will travel to face No. 3 Enterprise (6-3) in the 1A quarterfinals.

KEARNS 31, FREMONT 30 (OT)

KEARNS — No. 17 Fremont fell in overtime at No. 16 Kearns (7-4) in the 6A first round.

Kearns kicked a field goal as time expired to send the game to overtime. Fremont scored first in OT and had its PAT blocked, and Kearns converted a score and a kick to win. No other info was reported by press time.

The Silverwolves end the season with a 4-7 mark.

HERRIMAN 35, DAVIS 21

KAYSVILLE — No. 15 Davis fell behind 21-0 and could not recover in a 6A first round loss to No. 18 Herriman (4-7).

Jackson Stevens threw three touchdown passes for Davis (5-6). Stevens found Hunter Anderson for a 45-yard score with 2:58 left in the second quarter. Stevens connected with Trey Talbot from 4 yards out with 8:55 left in the game.

Ty Hoagland caught a 10-yard Stevens pass to cap the scoring with 2 seconds left in the game. Stevens completed 25 of 45 passes for 322 yards, but the Darts were held to 12 yards rushing while giving up 206.

WEST JORDAN 27, CLEARFIELD 0

WEST JORDAN — No. 23 Clearfield (1-10) saw its season end in a shutout loss at 10-seed West Jordan (8-2) in the 6A first round.

DIXIE 48, BEAR RIVER 20

ST. GEORGE — No. 13 Bear River saw its season end at No. 4 Dixie in the 4A first round.

Owen Olsen tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Garrison Marble with 11:49 left in the first half to get BR (0-10) on the board and cut the Dixie (7-3) lead to 14-7, but the Flyers scored 27 straight points to take control.

Alec Callister scored on a 3-yard plunge with 9:20 left in the game, then Olsen hit Cutler John from 19 yards out to cap the scoring.

NORTH SANPETE 37, BEN LOMOND 6

MT. PLEASANT — Auston Herbert scored No. 12 Ben Lomond’s only touchdown on a 16-yard run as the Scots lost at No. 5 North Sanpete in the 3A first round.

Ben Lomond (1-10) gave up a safety and five passing touchdowns to North Sanpete (5-6), who will play at No. 4 Morgan next week in the quarterfinals.
