OGDEN — When a softball team puts up a ton of runs, it may be difficult to select an offensive star of the game.
Such was the case in Ben Lomond High’s 15-9 win over rival Ogden on Tuesday, a Region 13 romp.
But, staged on a spectacular new softball field less than a month old, there are opportunities for a lot of firsts and Ben Lomond junior center fielder Dawnavin Frye had a big one — the first home run at the complex by a player on either team.
“I was aware of it; I definitely wasn’t expecting it,” Frye said. “I don’t know, my mind is blown, I’m going sideways. It’s the first over the fence home run I’ve ever hit.”
The Scots were in a 3-0 hole when Frye came up with one out in the bottom of the first and Marley McMillen on base after a single.
Frye launched a towering shot over the left-field fence and proudly took her place in Ben Lomond history.
“I just wanted to get on base, honestly,” she said. “It was my pitch, it was perfect — what I like. I’m a good hitter, not a home run hitter, though.”
Speaking of offensive stars, McMillen was on base four times, scored three runs and had two RBIs.
Ben Lomond plated four runs in the first to take a 4-3 lead and replaced its starting pitcher after one inning with junior right-hander Reagan Wilcox.
Wilcox promptly gave up six runs in the next two innings, and the Scots trailed 9-5 after two and a half.
“It can feel really crappy to give up a bunch of runs, especially since you feel like it’s your fault because you’re the one controlling the game,” Wilcox said. “But, I just think about my team and how much they have done for me and how much I’m willing to give for them, so it drives me to push harder.”
It didn’t take long for Wilcox’s teammates to come shining through for her.
The Scots (3-11, 1-4 Region 13) scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning, batting around for the second time in the game and took the lead for good at 10-9.
Wilcox shut out Ogden (2-6, 1-3) the rest of the way, pitching six innings, allowing five hits, issuing five walks, and striking out five.
“I told my coach I could finish the game and she trusted me,” Wilcox said. “I gained confidence (as the game went on) and did what I needed to do, what I knew I could do — just pitch strikes. Absolutely knowing I had the backup. I’m just there for my team. It’s not about me at that point.”
Ogden didn’t help its cause in that third inning, committing six errors, a passed ball and a wild pitch, while Ben Lomond only had two hits in the inning.
“No matter what happens, we’ve got to get right back into the game,” Ogden coach Brogan Poll said. “It’s difficult to break out of that mindset; we just need to keep playing ball. The girls are doing a lot better job of that.”
But, it was Ben Lomond’s day, and the Scots put the game away with five more runs in the fifth inning for the final margin of victory. Wilcox helped her own cause with a key, two-run single in the inning. She finished with two hits and a pair of runs scored.
“Our first (region) win, it feels amazing,” Frye said. “The first time we played them, we lost by one and it just felt really good to overpower what we did last time.”
Ogden’s Arecely DeLeon hit 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Trinity Probasco had two hits and an RBI, and Brighton Summers drove in two and scored a run.
