Long-range goals send Farmington girls soccer past Weber, keep Phoenix perfect in Region 1

Weber High and Farmington High girls soccer teams face off Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, at Farmington High School.FARMINGTON — Around a half-hour into Tuesday’s girls soccer game between Weber High and Farmington, the ball fell to Farmington’s Bella Sackett after a Weber defender cleared it out of the penalty box.
Sackett figured, why not take a shot?
To that point, Weber had dominated possession by a factor of two to one, had passed well to get the ball from defense to attack, and misfired in the final third of the field.
Farmington also generally didn’t have success in the final third of the field, but Sackett’s shot cruised in under the crossbar and the Phoenix ultimately didn’t need to be sharp in the Weber penalty box.
That goal was just the first in a 3-0 Farmington win with two long-range goals that see the Phoenix stay unbeaten in Region 1 through the first quarter of the region schedule.
From a possession standpoint, Sackett’s goal turned the tide of the game. It played more 50-50, but the Phoenix had more shots directly on goal, most of them being long-range efforts that Weber keeper Ashlynn Stokes saved.
“Honestly, we didn’t think (the first goal) was going to go in, but as soon as it went in our momentum changed, everybody started getting hyped, it helped us get our energy back up again,” senior Swayzee Arnell said.
Toward the end of the first half, Farmington had two big chances in the penalty box. Taya Rich hit a goal-bound shot that, had Weber defender Josie Maughan not been standing in the way, would’ve been a second Phoenix goal.
Two more chances in the penalty box deflected off Weber defenders for corner kicks. In the 61st minute, Arnell hit a low shot from outside the box that deflected in off Stokes for a 2-0 lead.
“Our goal was to get another goal in and shut them down and as soon as that happened, you could tell their energy went way low and we were ready to score again,” Arnell said.
Ten or so minutes later, Arnell crossed to Paige Erickson, whose shot was headed wide.
The ball got poked in by either Farmington’s Bailey Burrup or a Weber (2-4, 1-2 Region 1) defender, and Stokes didn’t have time to get her foot around the ball to clear it out.
At the other end, Farmington goalkeepers Emmy McKeon and Issy Hoskins saved everything that Weber players could shoot at them.
“We were definitely the better team overall possession-wise, we had a lot of good shots on goal,” Weber head coach Lei Anne Price said. “I just think our two or three mistakes cost three goals and that’s kind of the story of a lot of our games.”
Farmington (5-2, 3-0) knows things are about to get tougher as the perennial top teams in the region make up the next three games on the Phoenix’s schedule: home to Layton, at Davis, home to Syracuse.
Tuesday, at least, puts Farmington in a good position especially compared to last year’s 1-3 start in region where the Phoenix never really got off the ground.
