State baseball: Fremont gets top seed in 6A tournament, Weber to host Roy in 1st round
State tournament brackets were revealed Thursday for 6A and 5A high school baseball. Here’s where northern Utah schools in Regions 1, 2 and 5 landed in their respective tournaments.
6A: After winning Region 1 with an unbeaten 18-0 record and after having not lost since March, Fremont High’s baseball team is the No. 1 seed for the upcoming state playoffs. The Silverwolves have a first-round bye and will host a playoff series beginning next Thursday, May 19.
Farmington is the No. 9 seed with a 16-9 record. West Jordan also went 16-9, but finished at No. 8 in the RPI ahead of Farmington because WJ played a slightly stronger schedule. Farmington hosts West High in a first-round playoff series beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
The rest of the first-round matchups, which begin Saturday at 1 p.m., are as follows: No. 20 Roy at No. 13 Weber (2 p.m.), No. 22 Clearfield at No. 11 Davis, No. 21 Syracuse at No. 12 Kearns, and No. 19 Layton at No. 14 Herriman.
5A: Region 5 champion Woods Cross is the No. 7 seed and has a first-round bye, so the Wildcats will host a playoff series starting next Thursday, May 19.
The northern half of Region 5 will all have to play in to the state tournament on Friday, May 13. Bonneville was the bottom seed in the tournament, No. 33, and will face Timpview at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Uintah High, with the winner taking on Uintah in a play-in game.
No. 21 Northridge hosts No. 28 Alta and No. 24 Box Elder hosts No. 25 Cedar Valley in Friday’s play-in round.
Bountiful is the No. 10 seed and Viewmont is No. 14; both teams will host a playoff series starting this Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.
