Prep roundup: Clearfield boys soccer claims upset win in 6A first round

PLEASANT GROVE — Jaden Isaacs netted in the second half for the game’s only goal and Brady Echols kept a clean sheet as No. 24 Clearfield High boys soccer (3-14) grabbed a 1-0 road upset at No. 9 Pleasant Grove (10-8) in the 6A first round Friday.

The Falcons will travel to face No. 8 Mountain Ridge (9-6) in the second round Tuesday, May 17.

SOFTBALL

WOODS CROSS 13, OLYMPUS 1

HOLLADAY — Libby Clark struck out 19 batters in a complete-game win and No. 25 Woods Cross grabbed a 5A first-round win at No. 24 Olympus (9-13).

Clark and Kenna Cowley each batted 3 for 5 and drove in three for Woods Cross (8-12). Cowley hit a double. Kate Massey went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Ali Ebberts and Mel Zarate each hit a double, with Ebberts driving in two and Zarate one.

The Wildcats advance to the 5A regionals, where they will face No. 9 Timpanogos in a best-of-three series starting Saturday.

NORTHRIDGE 10, JORDAN 2

LAYTON — Kadence Chournos batted 2 for 3 with a home run, a triple and two RBIs as No. 19 Northridge scored seven runs in the fourth inning to beat No. 30 Jordan (5-19) in a single-elimination, 5A first-round game.

Amaya Porter batted 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Northridge (12-11). Shae Stokes went 2 for 3 and drove in 3. Jenika Weaver batted 2 for 4. Morgan Rich hit a double. Porter earned the win with 11 strikeouts in a complete game.

The Knights advance to the 5A regionals where they will travel to No. 14 East for a best-of-three series starting Saturday.

BASEBALL

BONNEVILLE 9, TIMPVIEW 5

VERNAL — Landon Minnoch batted 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as No. 33 Bonneville picked up its first win since April 1 to beat No. 32 Timpview (3-23) in a 5A play-in game at Uintah High.

Kole Minnoch hit 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Bonneville (4-19). Andrew Hansen hit a double and drove in three while Kaycee Parkhurst added an RBI double. Kole Minnoch pitched a complete game with seven hits and nine strikeouts.

UINTAH 10, BONNEVILLE 3

VERNAL — No. 33 Bonneville’s season ended in a 5A first-round loss at No. 17 Uintah (15-11).

Andrew Hansen batted 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Bonneville. Kole Minnoch got the Lakers’ other two hits, including a double. Bonneville finishes the season with a 4-20 record.

BOX ELDER 9, CEDAR VALLEY 5

BRIGHAM CITY — Tallin Chappell and Ryan Griffin hit home runs that drove in five as No. 24 Box Elder beat No. 25 Cedar Valley (12-13) in the 5A first round.

Damon Rodriguez batted 4 for 4 for Box Elder (13-13). Landon Golman hit a two-run double and Tommy Greer added an RBI double. KJ Argyle earned the win in three relief innings. The Bees trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Box Elder advances to the 5A regionals, where they will travel to No. 9 Orem for a best-of-three series starting Saturday.

BEAR RIVER 11, SKY VIEW 1

GARLAND — Gehrig Marble batted 3 for 4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs as No. 5 Bear River grabbed a six-inning, run-rule win and a 2-0 series victory over No. 12 Sky View (3-23) in the 4A first round.

Talon Marble batted 2 for 3 with a double and drove in two for Bear River (22-5). Easton Potter hit an RBI double. Hunter Harrow pitched four innings of no-hit ball and struck out five for the win. The Bears scored in every inning.

Bear River advances to the 4A tournament bracket play at Dixie State University. The Bears will face No. 4 Snow Canyon (18-9) at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16.

TRACK AND FIELD

ST. JOSEPH SWEEPS REGION 17

On Thursday, the St. Joseph Catholic High boys and girls track teams won their respective Region 17 championships in Salt Lake City.

The St. Joseph boys edged Rowland Hall 97 to 90.5, while the Jayhawks’ girls team dominated Rowland Hall 235-106.

St. Joseph event winners were Ellen Rickerd (girls 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles), Regan Belko (girls 1600 meters), Julie Rickerd (girls 3200), Lexi Willardsen (girls long jump and high jump), Sarah Snell (girls javelin), Macie Lane (girls discus), and Ruben Ypina (boys 100 and 200). St. Joseph’s girls and boys teams swept the 4×100, 4×400 and sprint medley relay races.

From Utah Military Academy, Quin Ekberg won the boys high jump, Ty Olsen won the boys javelin and Samuel Zimmerman won the boys discus.

BEAR RIVER BOYS WIN REGION 11

At the Region 11 championships at Ridgeline High, Bear River’s boys track team won the region championship, beating Sky View 138-102.

Joshua Fowler (boys 100), Braxton Hurst (400), Tydon Jones (javelin) and Isaac Evans (shot put) were individual winners for the Bears, who also won the 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

The Bear River girls finished in sixth place with 48 points, winning the 4×400 relay.
