Prep playoff roundup: Bountiful baseball advances on walk-off grand slam; Clearfield, Syracuse, Layton stage upsets

BOUNTIFUL — Dallin Maxwell hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning that triggered the run rule as No. 10 Bountiful High baseball downed No. 23 Stansbury (13-16) by a score of 14-4 to win the teams’ 5A first-round series 2-1.

Maxwell batted 3 for 5 with a double to go along with his grand slam and drove in seven for Bountiful (19-9). Kaisan Averett went 4 for 4 with two doubles. Truman Duryea hit a triple, a double and a single. Drew Bowles hit three singles.

Hank Tippetts batted 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Drew Beck added an RBI double. The RedHawks tallied 19 hits on the day, Tavis Danner earned the win with two hits and six strikeouts in 3 2/3 relief innings.

Bountiful advances to the 5A super regionals beginning Thursday.

STANSBURY 8, BOUNTIFUL 5

BOUNTIFUL — In Bountiful’s game 2 loss, Truman Duryea batted 2 for 3 with one RBI. James Jordan hit a triple. Kaisan Averett drove in one.

WEBER 11, ROY 1

PLEASANT VIEW — Jake Lindsay hit a solo home run to trigger the run rule as No. 13 Weber (15-12) swept No. 20 Roy in a 6A first-round, best-of-three series.

Bode Larson batted 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs for Weber (15-12). Ian Carver hit a three-run home run and Dominic Salerno batted 2 for 3 with a solo homer. Dax Rhees pitched two innings for the win.

Teyo Gil batted 2 for 3 with a double for Roy (11-16). Justin Miller batted 2 for 3. Max Robinson drove in Ryder Williams on a sacrifice fly for the Royals’ only run.

The Warriors advance to the 6A super regionals, a three-game series beginning Thursday, May 19 at the home sight of the higher-seeded school.

CLEARFIELD 18, DAVIS 0 (5)

KAYSVILLE — Shaydn Stoker hit a grand slam and had seven RBIs as No. 22 Clearfield pulled off the upset and beat No. 11 Davis (14-14) in the teams’ 6A first-round, best-of-three series 2-1.

Porter Benton hit 3 for 4 with two doubles for Clearfield (7-21). Devan Harmer homered and Peyton Kotter hit 2 for 2 with two walks and two RBIs. Dawson Burton tossed a two-hit shutout.

Brock Wright hit 2 for 2 for Davis.

CLEARFIELD 12, DAVIS 7 (9)

KAYSVILLE — No. 11 Davis scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game 7-7, No. 22 Clearfield scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie their 6A first-round series.

Shaydn Stoker batted 2 for 5 with a double and four RBIs for Clearfield. Cayden Wilson batted 2 for 5 and drove in one. Cayden Sato and Devan Harmer each had two hits. Peyton Kotter earned the win in three relief innings.

Tyson Elkins batted 3 for 4 with a double for Davis. Max Hunter drove in two with a single.

SYRACUSE 15, KEARNS 7

KEARNS — Easton Hamblin batted 2 for 4 with a grand slam and five RBIs as No. 21 Syracuse completed the upset of No. 12 Kearns (16-12) in the 6A first-round series.

Tatum Martin batted 3 for 5 with a triple and an RBI for Syracuse (7-21). Tyler Mitchell went 3 for 5 with a double. Corbin Sholly hit 2 for 3 with a double and drove in three. Rohde Smith batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Zade Finch pitched three innings with five hits and five strikeouts in the win.

The Titans advance to the super regionals starting on Thursday, May 19.

SYRACUSE 14, KEARNS 3

KEARNS — Rohde Smith batted 4 for 5 with a double and four RBIs as Syracuse evened its 6A first-round, best-of-three series  at No. 12 Kearns.

Tatum Martin batted 2 for 5 with two doubles and drove in four for Syracuse. Corbin Sholly went 2 for 4 with two doubles and scored two runs. Austin Burton and Tyler Mitchell each hit a two-run double. Jake Hopkins earned the win with six strikeouts and four hits in six innings.

LAYTON 5, HERRIMAN 4

HERRIMAN — Cam Hancock batted 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs as No. 19 Layton swept its 6A first-round series at No. 14 Herriman (11-16).

Boston Holyoak batted 3 for 4 for Layton (12-15). Carsten McNeely went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Dax Maroney drove in one on a sacrifice fly. Ryder Gates pitched five innings in the win, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

The Lancers advance to the super regionals beginning Thursday, May 19.

BEAR RIVER 12, SNOW CANYON 3

ST. GEORGE — Hunter Smoot batted 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs as No. 5 Bear River beat No. 4 Snow Canyon (18-11) at the 4A tournament at Dixie State.

Hunter Harrow batted 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs for Bear River (23-5). Garrison Marble hit an RBI double. Ashton Harrow and Talon Marble each drove in one.

Bear River advances to face No. 1 Dixie on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

OREM 5, BOX ELDER 2

OREM — Landon Golman hit 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI as No. 24 Box Elder’s season ended in a 5A first-round series loss at No. 9 Orem (19-8).

Kade Hall, Tommy Greer and Matt Peterson collected one hit each for Box Elder, which finishes the year 13-15.

SOFTBALL

BOX ELDER 10, ALTA 3

BRIGHAM CITY — Sydney Stokes hit 4 for 4 with two stolen bases and one RBI to lead No. 11 Box Elder to a 5A first-round playoff series sweep over No. 22 Alta (12-14).

Tegan Mecham hit a home run and drove in three runs for Box Elder (19-11). Megan Rountree stole three bases. Ashley Hammers pitched a complete game, allowing three runs with three strikeouts and drove in two runs at the plate.

The Bees advance to a second-round, best-of-three series in the 5A state tournament starting Thursday, May 19.

VIEWMONT 12, MAPLE MOUNTAIN 5

BOUNTIFUL — Anna Moore hit 3 for 3 with two RBIs as No. 15 Viewmont completed a two-game sweep of No. 18 Maple Mountain (9-16) in the teams’ 5A first-round, best-of-three series and advance to the next round of the playoffs.

Kennedy Embrey hit 3 for 4 with two stolen bases for Viewmont (16-10). Sydni Steed hit 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Molly Roberts pitched a complete game for the Vikings, allowing five runs with five hits and six strikeouts.

HERRIMAN 9, LAYTON 8

LAYTON — No. 14 Layton allowed four runs in the top of the seventh to fall behind 9-5, then came up just short in its comeback bid in a game 2 loss to No. 19 Herriman.

Joslyn Purcell batted 2 for 3 with a solo home run and a double for Layton. Lauren Hansen went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Graccee Godfrey hit 2 for 3 with a double and drove in two. Ellie Robbins added a double.

The Lancers and Mustangs’ series-deciding game 3 ended after press time.

LONE PEAK 2, DAVIS 1

HIGHLAND — No. 15 Lone Peak scored a run in the fourth inning that served as the winning run, eliminating No. 18 Davis from the 6A playoffs.

Aubrey Noriega hit 2 for 3 for Davis (9-15). Ellie Black pitched six strong innings and drove in the Darts’ lone run.

TIMPANOGOS 8, WOODS CROSS 6

OREM — No. 25 Woods Cross gave up a 4-1 lead and saw its season end at No. 8 Timpanogos in the first round of the 5A playoffs in a 2-0 sweep.

Libby Clark hit 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double for Woods Cross (8-17). Ali Ebberts and Kenna Cowley doubled.
