By Standard-Examiner - | May 19, 2022

ST. GEORGE — Bear River High School softball will get the chance to play for a repeat 4A state championship.

The No. 1 Bears survived a back-and-forth game against No. 4 Snow Canyon on Thursday in St. George, beating the Warriors 5-4, aided with a go-ahead solo home run by McCall Maxfield in the fifth inning.

In the top of the seventh, pitcher Kate Dahle struck two of the three Snow Canyon batters out while right fielder Carlee Miller made a diving catch for the inning’s other out.

Dahle struck out eight in a complete game.

Bear River (28-3) started quickly, scoring two runs on the first three pitches its batters saw. Kynlei Nelson doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Zoe Sorensen hit a first-pitch, two-run homer for an early 2-0 lead.

A Snow Canyon attempt at throwing a BR runner out at second base instead let a run score from third base for a 3-1 Bears lead. Nelson hit an RBI single for a 4-1 lead in the fourth.

The Warriors tied the game with three runs in the fifth, all from a slow-rolling single to center field by Meah Stafford.
