Prep playoff roundup: Strasburg aces again; Weber and Fremont softball advance

FARMINGTON — Kendall Strasburg got the better of Farmington in the circle for the second straight day, and also was not retired at the plate in the leadoff spot, as No. 10 Weber High softball eliminated No. 7 Farmington with a 6-0 win Friday, winning their 6A second-round series 2-0 to advance to the final-eight championship bracket.

Strasburg threw a three-hit shutout, all singles, striking out four and walking two, while hitting 4 for 4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored for Weber (17-10). Ellie Nielson drove in three runs and Hadley Howell doubled.

Delaney Baker hit 2 for 3 for Farmington (15-9) while taking the loss in the circle, striking out eight and walking four while surrendering five earned runs on nine hits.

Weber’s next opponent is yet to be determined, as the bracket is reseeded for the final round, but bracket play begins Tuesday, May 24, at the Cottonwood Complex in Salt Lake County.

FREMONT 7, WEST JORDAN 5

PLAIN CITY — Brinley Johnson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead No. 4 Fremont to a walk-off win and 2-0 series sweep of No. 13 West Jordan (15-13) in the 6A second round.

Kendyl Skeen batted 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs for Fremont (19-3). Keysha McKean hit an RBI single. Johnson earned the win with five hits and four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

The Silverwolves advance to championship bracket play starting Tuesday, May 24, at the Cottonwood Complex.

RIDGELINE 3, BEAR RIVER 2

ST. GEORGE — No. 1 Bear River gave up two runs in the top of the seventh inning in a Game 1 loss to No. 3 Ridgeline (25-5) in the 4A championship series.

Aubree Fry batted 2 for 3 and drove in one for Bear River (28-4). Carlee Miller had the oher RBI. Kate Dahle took the loss, giving up four hits and no earned runs with five strikeouts.

Game 2 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. Should Bear River prevail, a winner-take-all game will be played at 1:30 p.m.

BOUNTIFUL 10, EAST 0

BOUNTIFUL — Ella Miller batted 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as No. 4 Bountiful used a run-rule win to sweep No. 14 East (14-7) in the 5A second-round series.

Isabeau Hoff batted 2 for 4 and drove in two for Bountiful (19-5-1). Athena Tongaonevai hit a two-run home run. Shiloh Johnson hit a double. Eva Stoddard pitched a six-inning complete game, allowing two hits and striking out eight,

The Redhawks advance to 5A championship bracket play Tuesday, May 24, at the Cottonwood Complex.

UINTAH 11, VIEWMONT 1

VERNAL — No. 15 Viewmont saw its season end in a 5A second-round series sweep at No. 3 Uintah (21-7).

Sydni Steed drove in Emily Egnew for the Viewmont (16-12) run. Egnew, Molly Roberts, Kennedy Embry and Karli Dickerson each had one hit.

BASEBALL

BOUNTIFUL 18, WOODS CROSS 8

WOODS CROSS — Truman Duryea batted 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double and eight RBIs to lead No. 10 Bountiful to a series sweep at No. 7 Woods Cross in the 5A second round.

TJ Dahlke batted 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for Bountiful (21-9). Kaisan Averett went 3 for 3 with two doubles and drove in two. Drew Bowles hit two doubles and drove in one. Hank Tippetts had two hits and two RBIs.

Blake Stanger batted 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for Woods Cross (18-9). Isaac Canelon hit a two-run homer and Taylor Ayala hit a solo shot. Micah Mortensen and Cole Williams each drove in one.

Bountiful advances to championship bracket play starting Monday, May 23, at Utah Valley University.

TAYLORSVILLE 12, WEBER 2

TAYLORSVILLE — Ashton Burnett batted 2 for 3 with a solo home run and a double but No. 13 Weber was swept in its 6A second-round series at No. 6 Taylorsville (23-4).

Jake Lindsay hit an RBI double for Weber (15-14). Bominic Salerno batted 2 for 2.

FARMINGTON 6, WEST JORDAN 4

WEST JORDAN — Tucker Wall hit a three-run single in the top of the fifth to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 victory and a No. 9 Farmington sweep at No. 8 West Jordan (16-10) in a 6A second-round series.

Farmington (19-9 advances to championship bracket play starting Monday, May 23, at BYU.

BINGHAM 14, SYRACUSE 1

SOUTH JORDAN — No. 21 Syracuse trailed 10-1 after two innings and was held to one hit in a season-ending series sweep at No. 2 Bingham (22-5) in the 6A second round.

Carson Miles hit a single to drive in Corbin Sholly for Syracuse (7-23).

RIVERTON 8, LAYTON 7 (8)

RIVERTON — No. 19 Layton gave up the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the winning run in the eight in the decisive Game 3 of a 6A second-round series at No. 3 Riverton (20-7).

Boston Holyoak hit a two run double for Layton (13-17). Carter Day hit an RBI double. Gunner Wolfe batted 2 for 3.

LAYTON 6, RIVERTON 3

RIVERTON — In Game 2, Layton scored two insurance runs in the top of the sixth to beat Riverton to tie the series.

Crew Harrop drove in two with a single for Layton. Cam Hancock hit a double. Dax Maroney got a hit and an RBI. Boston Holyoak and Carter Day each drove in one. Ryder Gates earned the win with three hits and five strikeouts in five innings.
