Prep playoff roundup: Farmington baseball eliminates Fremont, then bows out

PROVO — No. 9 Farmington High baseball beat Fremont for the second time this week, keeping the Phoenix alive and ending the No. 1 Silverwolves’ season in 6A championship bracket play by the score of 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at BYU.

After Fremont went up 3-0 in the third inning, Jack Hansen took over on the mound for Farmington (22-10) and gave up three hits, striking out six and walking two in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Phoenix took control with a four-run fourth. Easton Wight tripled and drove in three runs to lead Farmington at the plate.

Landon Salvesen gave up five hits in a complete game for Fremont (27-3), allowing one earned run as the Silverwolves defense committed five errors in the game. Salvesen struck out three and walked one. Gavin Douglas, Jaxon Larkin and Cannon Koford each doubled, and Peyton Surrage drove in two runs.

BOUNTIFUL 8, OREM 6

OREM — No. 10 Bountiful piled a seven-run fifth inning on No. 9 Orem to eliminate the Tigers and keep playing in the 5A state tournament championship bracket at Utah Valley University.

The Redhawks (23-10) totaled eight hits in the decisive frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Carson Webster, an RBI double from Kaisan Averett and a two-run single from Easton Aubuchon to turn a 4-1 deficit into an 8-4 lead. Truman Duryea and Dallin Maxwell each hit 2 for 3 with a double.

Aubuchon gave up two earned runs through six innings but ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing a hit-by-pitch, a single and a double to make it 8-6 with no outs. Tavis Danner entered and ended the game in three pitches, recording outs on a bunt attempt and two first-pitch foul outs.

AMERICAN FORK 12, FARMINGTON 2

PROVO — No. 9 Farmington’s 6A tournament run ended in a five-inning loss to No. 5 American Fork.

The Phoenix (22-11) got a 2-for-2 night from Easton Wight and a double from Jack Hansen. Wight and Luke Workman each had an RBI as Farmington struck back with two runs in the third inning.

Farmington had used up all of its starting pitching trying to get to this stage, and AF took advantage with a six-run second inning and a six-run fifth to end the game.

LEHI 3, BOUNTIFUL 2

OREM — No. 10 Bountiful (23-11) gave up a lead in the sixth inning and lost to No. 2 Lehi in the 5A championship bracket Wednesday night, ending the Redhawks’ season.

Drew Beck hit 2 for 2 with a home run. Truman Duryea hit 2 for 4 with one RBI. Tavis Danner pitched six strong innings, allowing four hits and three runs, but took a tough loss.
