Prep basketball roundup: Box Elder boys rout Weber; Layton beats Copper Hills in OT

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder High boys basketball outscored Weber 43-30 after halftime on the way to an 84-60 home win Tuesday to open the 2022-23 season.

Elijah Kersey paced Box Elder (1-0) with 23 points and three 3-pointers. Cole Mortensen scored 18 points and Cooper Stevenson added 13 points on four treys.

Hunter Schenck led Weber (0-1) with a game-high 26 points and five 3-pointers. Jaxon Shaw scored six points.

LAYTON 76, COPPER HILLS 74 (OT)

LAYTON — Layton was outscored 19-9 in the fourth quarter to force overtime, then bested Copper Hills with a 13-11 advantage in the extra period.

Mekhi Martin scored a game-high 23 points with four 3-pointers for Layton (1-0). Josh Brown tallied 17 points and KJ Miller added 11.

DAVIS 60, BONNEVILLE 32

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Davis doubled up Bonneville in shooting percentage — 56.1% to 28.6% — on the way to a blowout win Tuesday.

Alex Fisher led Davis (1-0) with 16 points and eight rebounds while shooting 4 of 7 from the 3-point line. Coleman Atwater totaled 14 points, six rebounds and four steals off the bench. Zach Fisher added 12 points and six rebounds.

Bo Dixon scored seven points for Bonneville (0-1). Nathan Burdett added five points and seven rebounds. The Lakers shot 3 of 20 from deep.

SYRACUSE 62, GREEN CANYON 47

SYRACUSE — Syracuse outscored Green Canyon 36-28 in the second half to pull away for a home win.

Kaden Ericksen led Syracuse (1-0) with 20 points. Carter Semrow scored 13 points and Kane King tallied 10. Brevin Hamblin hauled in 10 rebounds.

BEAR RIVER 45, KEARNS 39

GARLAND — Bear River outscored Kearns 12-8 in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead into the break and held on for a season-opening win.

Gehrig Marble led all scorers with 13 points for Bear River (1-0). Owen Olsen added eight points and two 3-pointers.

RIVERTON 57, FREMONT 51

RIVERTON — Hunter Hansen scored a game-high 24 points for Fremont in a season-opening loss at Riverton

David Calvert scored nine points for Fremont (0-1) while Boston Hadley and Christian Blanch each added six.

SKYLINE 60, ROY 54

ROY — Roy trailed 45-44 after three quarters but could get no closer in a home loss to Skyline.

Elijah Sowards led Roy (0-1) with 18 points. Beau Belnap tallied 11 points with three 3-pointers and Jony Alcaraz added eight points.

UTAH MILITARY 84, MERIT ACADEMY 60

RIVERDALE — Five players scored in double figures as Utah Military Academy (1-1) beat Merit Prep to get its first win of the year.

James Von Weber scored 22 points to lead the Thunderbirds. Caleb Johnson and Quin Ekberg scored 12 points each. Lloyd Andersen and Amboy Sky added 11 points each.

LONE PEAK 74, VIEWMONT 67

OREM — Viewmont battled against Lone Peak but a 20-8 third quarter was the difference.

Zach Robison scored 20 points to lead Viewmont (0-1). Scott Noel totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Jaxon Heusser added 13 points.

BONNEVILLE 62, LOGAN 19

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville outscored Logan 20-3 in the first quarter in a big home win to start the season.

Hailee Cherry scored a game-high 16 points with four 3-pointers for Bonneville (1-0). Libby Jensen and Paige Fraizer each scored 10 points while Tyler Moss added eight.

HERRIMAN 58, FREMONT 56

PLAIN CITY — Fremont (0-1) led 49-40, then gave up an 18-7 fourth-quarter run and lost its season opener to Herriman.

Aly Coombs led Fremont with 15 points and shot 6 for 7 at the foul line. Kaidance King scored 13 points and Sierra Eddie had 11 with three 3-pointers.

The Mustangs made 11 3-pointers, including four in the fourth quarter after Fremont went on a 20-4 run across the third and fourth quarters to take the 49-40 lead.

CLEARFIELD 47, TAYLORSVILLE 41

CLEARFIELD — Izzy Wyaskett scored 16 points and Clearfield outscored Taylorsville 30-20 in the second half to pick up a season-opening win.

Amoree Scholer and Xiyah Yarbrough each added eight points for Clearfield.

SYRACUSE 60, CYPRUS 34

MAGNA — Syracuse outscored Cyprus 32-12 over the second and third quarters to claim a road win.

Avery Sanders led Syracuse (1-0) with 17 points and nine assists. Maylee Anderson scored 10 points and Ariah Hacker grabbed 13 rebounds.

WESTLAKE 56, WEBER 22

PLEASANT VIEW — Weber fell behind 30-13 at the half in a home loss to Westlake.

Logyn Howell led Weber (0-1) with eight points and Katelynn Butler added seven.

WOODS CROSS 53, LAYTON 49

LAYTON — Woods Cross outscored Layton 15-9 in the third quarter to break a 25-25 halftime tie in a road win.

Katie King and Georgia Hatton each scored 19 points to lead Woods Cross (1-0), King hit three 3-pointers and shot 4 of 4 from the free throw line. Kenna Cowley added eight points.

Lauryn Hall led Layton (0-1) with 12 points and two treys. Charley Stevens scored 10 points.

BOUNTIFUL 54, ROY 12

ROY — Bountiful outscored Roy 28-7 in the first half for a road win in each teams’ season opener.

Taylor Harvey led all scorers with 15 points for Bountiful (1-0). Jordyn Harvey scored 13 points and Lizzy McConkie added nine.

Sienna Bodily and Alyea Martinez each hit a 3-pointer for Roy (0-1).

BEN LOMOND 43, MAESER PREP 25

OGDEN — Kyara Tinajero scored 26 points with two 3-pointers as Ben Lomond ran away from Maeser Prep for a home win.

Dori Jenson added five points for Ben Lomond (2-0) and Maleah Richey scored four.

ST. JOSEPH 54, ROCKWELL 24

EAGLE MOUNTAIN — Lizzie Randall scored 19 points to lead St. Joseph to a win at Rockwell.

Sarah Snell added 15 points for St. Joseph (2-1) and Lexy Bombela scored 12.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 70, MANTI 37

LAYTON — Ruzgar Boyle scored 31 points with five 3-pointers as Layton Christian ran away from Manti on Monday.

Grace Edogiawerie tallied 13 points and eight rebounds for LCA (2-0). Bianca Silva added 11 points, seven assists and seven steals.

BOX ELDER 41, MOUNTAIN CREST 38

HYRUM — Box Elder trailed 12-3 after one quarter, then fought back to grab a road win at Mountain Crest.

Ashlyn Wight led all scorers with 11 points for Box Elder (1-0). Sarena Mackley scored seven points. Madison Reeder and Olivia Godfrey each added six points.

MORGAN 52, GREEN CANYON 51

MORGAN — Morgan withstood a 21-13 fourth-quarter charge by Green Canyon to get its first win of the season. Elena Birkeland led Morgan (1-0) with 24 points on five 3-pointers.

Alyvia Jaffa added 13 points and shot 7 for 9 at the foul line. The Trojans took advantage of 25 Green Canyon turnovers.
