Girls soccer: Davis golden goal prevents Layton region title, creates 3-way tie for 2nd

LAYTON — The Region 1 girls soccer match between Davis High and Layton was tied at 0-0 for 5,744 seconds.

Then suddenly, it wasn’t.

Davis sophomore Cadence Packer scored a golden goal on a header off a corner kick by Tessa Franks with 4:16 remaining in double overtime, sending the Darts to a 1-0, seismic showdown victory over Layton on Thursday.

“They didn’t really mark me, so I was open and she dropped it exactly where I was,” Packer said. “It was a perfect corner by Tess, so it was very easy to get the header. I just went up and got it. It was awesome.”

Franks was long on a corner kick just moments before, but the next one was right place, right time.

“We were practicing it yesterday and it was basically just anyone get their head on it, and I was there and got one to finish it,” Packer said.

There was so much at stake for the Lancers (9-7, 8-4 Region 1), where a win would have given them a share of the Region 1 championship. But the loss drops them into a three-way tie with Davis (10-5, 8-4) and the loser of the Farmington-Syracuse game played late Thursday night.

Layton dominated much of the second half but couldn’t get one past Davis keeper Elesha Magley and the Darts finally reversed course late in the game.

“It was so stressful. They had us for a good 25 minutes in the second half, but we just got after it and had a lot of heart the last little bit and in overtime,” Packer said. “We gave it our all.”

Magley kept the clean sheet and had one mind-blowing save during a second-half Layton assault. Jersee Clapier took dead aim from 5 feet out and fired a rocket that Magley blocked away.

“I knew I had to stay calm; it’s never good to get in your head right before a shot comes in,” Magley said. “She took a touch in front of her body; I took my space up and shut down the angle. I saw her hips going far post and I just got ready, put my hand up there and got the save.”

While penalty kicks were in the cards, Magley also hoped it wouldn’t come down to that.

“I was preparing myself to go to PKs, but I have faith in my team that they can put a goal in,” Magley said. “I’m really proud of how we played in overtime. We just stepped up our game. It was rough in regulation because we weren’t connecting, but we turned it around. It was 10 times better and I’m just so grateful we scored.”

The Lancers lost 3-0 earlier this season at Davis, so Thursday was a dramatic change from that game. But in the end, you won’t win many games when you score zero goals.

“Our defense frustrated their forwards and kept the ball outside. That’s exactly what we were trying to do,” Layton coach Tara Ferrin said. “We created lots of scoring opportunities, we just didn’t finish. Their keeper made two great saves down there in the goal and kept them in it. Give her that credit.

“But I’m proud of our team. They left it out on the field, and that’s all I’m asking.”
