Ogden's Lincoln Barnes (29) jumps up for a corner kick during the 3A boys soccer state quarterfinals against Judge Memorial on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

For some high school spring sports teams, it feels like the 2023 season hasn’t really started, what with the record-breaking snowfall that’s leaving teams encased in ice.

In reality, state tournaments are only three weeks away. The first reminder of such came out this week with the release of RPI rankings in high school boys soccer and lacrosse.

BOYS SOCCER

Ogden, Farmington and Layton Christian’s boys soccer teams top their respective classification RPI rankings, which were released Tuesday morning.

The Tigers (7-1) have a comfortable lead in the 3A rankings over No. 2 Juan Diego and No. 3 Morgan (6-3), whom they’ll play again later this month in the second half of Region 13 play. Ogden and Morgan are slated for first-round byes and would host playoff games through the quarterfinals if they stay in the top four.

Ben Lomond (3-5) is No. 11 in the 3A rankings, which would grant the Scots a first-round bye in the playoffs, but a second-round road game at the No. 6 seed since there are 20 teams in 3A, meaning only seeds 13-20 contest first-round games.

3A and 2A boys soccer have the first spring sports state tournament of the season, beginning April 28. State semifinals are scheduled for May 10 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, with the title game May 12 at Real Salt Lake’s America First Field (formerly Rio Tinto Stadium).

In 6A, Farmington (5-0) is ranked No. 1 and is one of four Region 1 teams in the top six of the rankings, along with No. 4 Fremont (5-2), No. 5 Davis (2-1) and No. 6 Syracuse (4-2). Roy (4-1) is No. 11, followed by No. 15 Layton, No. 21 Weber and No. 25 Clearfield.

One change this season in 6A is there will be 27 teams in the state tournament instead of 26, after the UHSAA granted Real Salt Lake Academy Charter High’s request to move up from 3A to 6A as an unattached school (RSL Academy lost in the 3A title game last year to Layton Christian).

In 5A, Northridge checks in at No. 5 with a 2-1 record. Box Elder (2-3) is all the way at No. 23 and Bonneville (0-4) is presently No. 30. The top 24 teams make the playoffs in both 6A and 5A, the top eight teams receive first-round byes and seed Nos. 9-16 host first-round home games.

In 4A, Layton Christian (6-1) is No. 1 in the classification so far. The Eagles are 4-1 against current 4A schools. Bear River (1-6) is No. 13.

In 2A, St. Joseph (6-0) is No. 2 in the rankings. The Jayhawks are on track for a first-round bye and home games in the second round and quarterfinals, should they win. Utah Military Academy (0-3) is No. 19. The 2A state tournament starts April 28. Like 3A, the semis are at Zions Bank Stadium on May 10 and the finals are at Real Salt Lake’s home stadium on May 12.

The rankings are currently skewed because of the disparity in the amount of games some teams have played, due to weather-related postponements and cancellations.

In 2A, for instance, some teams have played nine games and others have played just three.

BOYS LACROSSE

Fremont (7-2, 5-0 Region 1) leads the Region 1 group with a No. 4 ranking in the RPI with the second half of region games right around the corner. Roy High fields boys and girls lacrosse teams that play in Region 1 because Region 2 schools don’t have lacrosse.

In 5A, Northridge (4-2) is the top-ranked Region 5 team in the RPI. Its two losses are against teams ranked first and third (Brighton and Park City) in 5A. Region 5 games begin next week.

Boys lacrosse playoffs begin May 16. State semifinals are at Westminster College on May 24, with championship games at Zions Bank Stadium on May 26.

6A: Fremont (4), Weber (6), Davis (8), Farmington (12), Clearfield (15), Roy (17), Syracuse (18), Layton (20)

5A: Northridge (4), Box Elder (12), Bonneville (20)

4A: Bear River (3)

GIRLS LACROSSE

Farmington is 5-0 (4-0 Region 1) with an average margin of victory of 9.2 goals, and checks in at No. 2 in 6A girls lacrosse. The winter weather has skewed the girls lacrosse rankings, with Box Elder having played just two games this season and teams such as Lehi having already played seven.

Girls lacrosse playoffs begin May 16. Semifinals are at Westminster College on May 23; championship games are at Zions Bank Stadium on May 25.

6A: Farmington (2), Syracuse (7), Davis (9), Clearfield (11), Roy (12), Fremont (14), Weber (19), Layton (20)

5A: Box Elder (10), Bonneville (12), Northridge (25)

4A: Bear River (2)
