Fremont's Hunter Hansen (2) drives against American Fork's Ashton Wallace during a 6A state quarterfinal Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.Ryan Odom’s college basketball coaching move from Utah State University to Virginia Commonwealth University had at least one local impact.
Fremont High junior guard Hunter Hansen announced that, due to the coaching change, he was de-committing from Utah State. Hansen verbally committed to the Aggies last summer and had been expected to sign with them when he was a senior.
He averaged 18.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this past season on 50% shooting from the field, helping Fremont win a Region 1 championship and advance to the state quarterfinals. Hansen missed two games in January after dislocating his kneecap, an injury which caused him to miss half of his freshman year.
Weber State has since offered Hansen a scholarship, which was revealed on Wednesday. Hansen isn’t rated by any of the major basketball recruiting services, but is expected to be a highly coveted prospect this summer.
ERICKSEN COMMITS TO EASTERN ARIZONA
Syracuse senior Kaden Ericksen announced his commitment to Eastern Arizona College, a junior college in Thatcher, Arizona, about 50 miles west of the Arizona-New Mexico border.
Ericksen, a guard, averaged 16.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for the Titans this past season. He shot 46.8% from the field, 33% on 3-pointers and 70.2% at the foul line.
Ericksen had eight games where he scored 20 or more points, with a season high of 32 in a 76-66 win at Weber in January. Syracuse went 15-8, its highest single-season win mark in school history, and advanced to the 6A state quarterfinals.
