FARMINGTON — Seventeen seconds.
That’s how long it took Farmington High boys soccer to score a goal and take the lead for good after Fremont had tied things up at 1-1 in the 34th minute Friday.
Junior captain Chase Ashby broke free from the pack and beat helpless Fremont keeper Ryker Loock one-on-one to give the Phoenix a 2-1 edge bare moments after Ryker Saunders had put the Silverwolves on the board.
“We had just gotten scored on and I wanted to step up the pace,” Ashby said. “I got the ball; it was a lucky move that I tried and it worked. I ended up being able to get past the defender and I touched it to the goalie right after that.”
Farmington added an insurance goal midway through the second half and, having played one more Region 1 match than Fremont, has a slight advantage in the standings with the 3-1 victory.
“We knew it was a must-win game, especially against a good team like Fremont,” Ashby said. “We just had to shut them out or at least hold them to one or two, to put us in a good position and set us up against Weber for region. We were coming to play.”
The responsibility of holding a high-scoring Fremont (11-3, 7-3 Region 1) team down fell to Phoenix (9-3, 8-3) goalie Davis Wadsworth and his defense.
For more than a half-hour of game time, the teams battled to a scoreless draw before Boston Petersen broke the ice for Farmington with a goal in the 31st minute.
Three minutes later Saunders pulled the Silverwolves even at 1-1 with the score in the 34th minute.
Ashby then knocked in the quick strike goal 17 seconds later and Wadsworth made it stand up.
“I liked my position in goal, but my outside back got a little piece of it and changed the course of the ball, but at the end of the day I take responsibility for it,” Wadsworth said. “But, thanks to Chase he came back and answered immediately so ultimately it didn’t matter. We know we’re a good enough defense out there, that they’re not going to score any more than that.”
Sophomore Mac Jensen added the comfort goal for Farmington in the 63rd minute for the final 3-1 tally.
“We can’t let it happen again, can’t let them score again,” Ashby said. “We wanted to add a goal and keep our lead like we did with 20 minutes left. It was a good way to keep us ahead and we applied pressure the rest of the way.”
Fremont is still in position to vie for the region crown, as all of the teams at the top of the standings still have a minefield to navigate.
“We knew going into this stretch, playing Syracuse on Wednesday and Farmington today, if we could get through those games and win both that we’d set ourselves up for a shot at region,” Fremont coach Darren Erwin said. “We don’t believe it’s over. Region 1 is tough. We didn’t take care of our own business today, but we still have games against Layton and our rival Weber.
“Hopefully, Davis will lose one more and if it’s a three-way tie, at least it’s a chance for a region title.”
