BRIAN WOLFER, Special to the Standard-Examiner
Roy's Rhett Slater (37) tries to hang on as Fremont's Jace Hadley (19) moves upfield during a football game Friday, Aug. 19, 2022, at Roy High School. (BRIAN WOLFER, Special to the Standard-Examiner)A couple of big rivalry games take center stage in this week’s prep football slate in Northern Utah, as well as St. Joseph Catholic playing its first-ever football game.
Last week’s prediction record: 13-5 (.722)
Season prediction record: 13-5 (.722)
Syracuse at Brighton
Thursday on KJZZ
Syracuse (1-0) is coming off a better-than-expected blowout over Riverton and gets a better Brighton (1-0) team on the road on a short week.
Both quarterbacks and groups of receivers are good. The key will be whichever team can either figure its running game out, or stuff the other’s ground game.
Prediction: Syracuse
Game of the Week: Roy at Fremont
Both teams lost by a lot against good teams last week. Roy (0-1) has won seven of the last eight in this rivalry series, starting with a win in 2012. Most of those games have been decided by one possession, which is probably how this one turns out.
Fremont (0-1) had some good things happen last week but also lost middle linebacker Bubba Koford to a broken collarbone.
Prediction: Roy
Layton at Northridge
Layton (0-1) lost by 28 against a good Alta team, while Northridge (1-0) beat a down Murray team by 43.
Layton’s won the last three in the series. Expect a close game.
Prediction: Layton
Judge Memorial at Ogden
Ogden (1-0) did its damage last week on defense (seven turnovers, 11 tackles for loss) and through the air (313 yards, four TD — granted a lot of that came from screens). This week presents the Tigers a chance to run well also.
Prediction: Ogden
Mountain View at Ben Lomond
Both teams faded in the fourth quarter against good teams last week. Ben Lomond (0-1) has the players to take advantage of the Bruins’ pass defense, and faces a more straightforward spread offense to prepare for and not a Wing-T.
Prediction: Ben Lomond
Springville at Bonneville
Bonneville (0-1) goes from facing a good Ridgeline team to facing a big, physical and very good Springville (1-0) group. The Lakers already struggled on offense last week; now, they’re facing an even better defense.
Prediction: Springville
Weber at Pleasant Grove
Weber (0-1) threw well against Westlake last week and won the turnover battle, but the Warriors didn’t run well and gave up nearly 400 yards of offense. Pleasant Grove is a few steps up in competition.
Prediction: Pleasant Grove
Box Elder at Mountain Crest
Both teams scored big wins last week. Box Elder (1-0) ran for 381 yards and six touchdowns on 9.1 yards per carry against a bigger Kearns team and stayed consistent throughout.
Prediction: Box Elder
Bear River at Morgan
This game just got a lot more interesting after Bear River (1-0) beat Cedar Valley by 24 last week. The Bears looked good, but Morgan (0-1) presents a tougher challenge, especially up front.
Can the Trojans, who had nine tackles for loss last week against a bigger Crimson Cliffs team, get to BR’s offense before the Bears can unleash their receivers?
Prediction: Morgan
Clearfield at Hunter
Clearfield (0-1) will look for a better start this week after trailing 26-3 at halftime against Copper Hills. The Falcons face a big team that totaled five sacks last week against Green Canyon.
Prediction: Hunter
West Jordan at Davis
Davis (0-1) did well in a few areas of a 14-point loss to powerhouse Lehi last week. The Darts are hard to guard on offense and can make things difficult when on defense.
Prediction: Davis
Bountiful at Farmington
Both teams lost last week against really good teams. Farmington (0-1) couldn’t move the ball against Pleasant Grove while Herriman uncorked numerous big plays on Bountiful (0-1).
Call it a toss-up.
Prediction: Farmington
Granger at Viewmont
Granger (0-1) has a ton of talent but is hard to gauge after a 55-7 loss to Corner Canyon. Viewmont (1-0) played well on defense last week and will need another good game there to beat the Lancers.
Prediction: Viewmont
Rancho Christian (CA) vs. Layton Christian
At Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex
LCA (0-1) competed well early on against a high-powered San Juan team last week, ultimately losing 66-43 and giving up 694 yards of total offense.
The Eagles now welcome Rancho Christian (CA) for the latter’s season opener.
Prediction: Layton Christian
Monticello at St. Joseph, 3:30 p.m.
St. Joseph begins its football existence against the defending state runner-up Buckaroos, who return a dual-threat quarterback and a handful of defensive starters.
Prediction: Monticello
