LAYTON — For three quarters, Weber High freshman guard Avery Shupe hid in the shadows against Bonneville, going scoreless with her impact not apparent on Fright night’s game.

But Shupe suddenly shone brightly when she hit a 3-pointer to open the final frame, then made another from beyond the arc with 24 seconds on the clock which proved to be the game-winner.

Weber blew an early fourth-quarter lead, then showed some stability with some classy teamwork at the end and captured a close, 44-41 victory over the Lakers in a Burchell Basketball Classic game contested at Northridge High.

Bonneville (3-2) had battled back from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter and led 41-40 when the Warriors called timeout with 34.2 seconds left to strategize, resulting in Shupe’s big triple.

“We had a set play where I would go screen and she kicked it to me; I was open, so I shot it,” Shupe said. “Don’t rush it. Just confidence. I know my team isn’t going to be angry at me if I miss. I know they have confidence in me too.”

In a tight game throughout, the pendulum swung wide in the fourth quarter as Weber and Bonneville swapped six-point leads.

Tied at 28 after three quarters, Shupe buried her 3-pointer to open the fourth and, when Katelyn Arbon followed with a 3 a minute later, Weber led 34-28 with 6:14 left.

The Lakers countered with a 12-0 run, keyed from 3-pointers by Tyler Moss and Baylee Andreason. Whitni Johnson had four points in the streak and Bonneville went up 40-34 at the 2:55 mark.

Weber clawed back to tie it yet again (40-40), on 3s by Logyn Howell and Abby Sayer with 1:30 remaining.

“We came together as a team and got back in the game,” Shupe said. “We were striving; we wanted to win.”

Johnson made one of two free throws with 1:16 left, putting the Lakers up 41-40, setting the stage for Shupe’s clutch heroics.

Sayer led the Warriors with 10 points, while Shupe, Arbon and Rylee Jugler checked in with six each.

For the Lakers, Johnson paced them with 12 points and Andreason added seven.

Weber (2-4) is still a work in progress, with Shupe and freshman head coach Trevor Howell still getting to know the members of the team.

“I just work hard and try to be a good teammate. We are all new and (Howell) always says it’s a process,” Shupe said. “I love that because we don’t rush it and slowly move into it and do good as a team.”
