Prep basketball roundup: Weber boys rally to defeat Woods Cross in 6A-5A Challenge

KAYSVILLE — Weber High boys basketball stormed back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Woods Cross 23-14 to snag a 54-51 win in the 6A-5A Challenge on Friday at Davis High School.

Hunter Schenck scored 16 points with four assists and three steals for Weber (4-1), which won despite shooting 27.9% from the field and allowing Woods Cross to shoot 42.9%.

Tyler Payne added 13 points and eight rebounds, shooting 7 of 8 at the free-throw line. Weber had 17 offensive rebounds, six of which were pulled down by Will Stratford and five by Payne.

The lead changed seven times and the score was tied five times in the game. Weber committed six turnovers compared to the Wildcats’ 16.

FREMONT 66, BOX ELDER 52

KAYSVILLE — Ryker Saunders scored 25 points and shot 5 of 8 from the 3-point line to help lead Fremont over Box Elder at the 6A-5A Challenge at Davis High School.

Fremont (5-1) used a 20-6 second quarter to take control. Hunter Hansen added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Easton Duft had 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Tyler Allen shot 2 of 2 from downtown as the Silverwolves were 9 of 19 as a team.

Elijah Kersey poured in 27 points for Box Elder (0-5), going 9 of 14 from the field and 8 of 10 from the foul line, while adding eight rebounds and four assists. Trevor Wilkinson scored nine points, and Max Isaacson added eight points and nine rebounds.

DAVIS 54, VIEWMONT 45

KAYSVILLE — Viewmont scored the game’s first bucket but Davis needed just one lead change and took it the distance for a win on its home court in the 6A-5A Challenge.

Zach Fisher led Davis (4-2) with 12 points and five rebounds. Coleman Atwater put in 11 points and Ike Morgan scored 10. Atwater and Tradon Bessinger each had three assists and Caleb Taylor nabbed four steals.

Viewmont (1-4) got 17 points and six rebounds from Max Draper.

LAYTON 71, SKYLINE 60

LAYTON — Layton outscored Skyline 42-26 in the second half for a home win.

KJ Miller led Layton (5-0) with 29 points and five 3-pointers. Mekhi Martin scored 26 points with two treys.

OGDEN 66, APA-WV 45

OGDEN — Ogden led 34-15 at the half in a win over American Preparatory Academy-West Valley.

Brigham Call led Ogden (6-1) with 20 points. Nyiol Hauet added 12 points and Stockton Marriott scored 10.

BEAR RIVER 62, DESERT HILLS 50

SMITHFIELD — Bear River turned a 14-11 deficit after one quarter into a win over Desert Hills at Sky View High’s tournament.

Kyver Jensen led Bear River (6-1) with 12 points and one 3-pointer. Kash Avery and Gherig Marble each scored 11 points, with Avery hitting three treys. ‬Bridger Barfuss added nine points.

‬ST. JOSEPH 58, FREEDOM PREP 42

OGDEN — St. Joseph jumped to a 25-5 lead after one quarter in a home win over Freedom Preparatory Academy.

Gavin Donovan led St. Joseph (2-2) with 16 points and Gavin Wolf added 11 points.

‬MTN CREST 58, ROY 55

ROY — A strong second quarter gave Roy a 26-25 halftime lead but Mountain Crest outpaced the Royals in the second half.

Bronson Belnap shot 8 for 13 from the field and scored 20 points for Roy (1-3). Isaac Burnett added 16 points with four 3-pointers and five rebounds. Dahlen Pontius had six points, six rebounds and three steals.

OLYMPUS 82, SYRACUSE 42

KAYSVILLE — Syracuse was outscored 47-17 across the second and third quarters in a loss to Olympus in the 6A-5A Challenge at Davis High.

Terik Hamblin led Syracuse (2-2) with 16 points on three 3-pointers and eight rebounds. Joshua Godfrey added eight points.

SPRINGVILLE 68, NORTHRIDGE 52

SPRINGVILLE — Bentley Whitear scored 13 points for Northridge as the Knights lost at Springville.

De’Qoune Kennedy scored 10 points for Northridge (0-6). Peyton Perkins and Josh Kitchen each added nine points, with Perkins hitting three 3-pointers.

LAYTON — Three Knights scored 13 points apiece as host Northridge downed Ogden in the Burchell Classic at Northridge High.

Sarah Mower, Kaylee Hess and Marley Cross each tallied 13 points for Northridge (3-1), each hitting one 3-pointer.

Lily Gonzalez led all scorers with 17 points and three 3-pointers for Ogden (2-3). Salote Tonga added 14 points.

ROY 39, PROVO 23

ROY — Roy outscored Provo 29-10 in the second half for a home win.

Jerzee Hart scored nine points on 4-of-8 shooting with eight rebounds and five blocks for Roy (2-3). Nicole Williams scored 12 points and Analeise Maharaj had five assists.

FREMONT 37, PAYSON 34

SANDY — Ama Herrick scored 11 points as Fremont bested Payson at the Beetdigger Classic.

Syncere Langston added nine points for Fremont (2-3).

ROCKWELL ACADEMY 47, ST. JOSEPH 41

EAGLE MOUNTAIN — Katelyn Martinez led St. Joseph with 16 points as St. Joseph fell at Rockwell Academy.

Lizzie Randall scored 10 points for St. Joseph (0-3) and Mimi Dewitte added eight.
