Syracuse High promotes football defensive coordinator Mitch Tulane to head coach

Syracuse High

Mitch Tulane

Mitch Tulane graduated from Syracuse High School, played football at Weber State, came back to Syracuse and has taught and coached football there ever since.

Wednesday, he was promoted. Syracuse High named Tulane the new football head coach. He currently teaches history at SHS and has been the football team’s defensive coordinator for the last six years, replacing Mike Knight as head coach.

“Man, I’m thrilled. Super excited,” Tulane told the Standard-Examiner.

The Titans have had one of the better defenses in Region 1 and the state in Tulane’s six years as DC. In the last three seasons, Syracuse has allowed 15.2, 13 and 14.3 points per game. The Titans went 7-4 this year and lost to Bingham in the second round of the 6A playoffs.

Tulane said a lot of things at Syracuse will stay mostly the same, including the coaching staff and on-field schemes.

Following a run of four winning seasons in the last five, including three straight winning seasons and a region title in 2022, there’s not much on the surface that appears like it needs changing. Tulane still has big hopes for the program.

“We have to be able to raise the standard of success at Syracuse High School, and with that, it’s the little things. I think for too long, we’ve gotten by on the talent of the kids in our community, in the school, and I want to emphasize the small details that can push us over the top,” Tulane said.

One of his hopes for the program is perhaps the idyllic version of high school sports that is becoming increasingly harder to find.

“In today’s day and age, right, where everyone wants to go play and transfer and go play for the biggest, shiny thing: let’s win with Syracuse kids, you know?” Tulane said. “Let’s win with pride in our community and let’s give these 7-, 8-, 9-year-old kids something to look forward to and be proud to represent.”
