Prep roundup: Northridge, Davis athletes victorious at state wrestling, swimming championships
Northridge High senior Breanna Clanton won the 140-pound championship match at Saturday’s 5A girls wrestling state tournament held at Utah Valley University.
Clanton pinned Springville’s Karalie Harris early in the third period while trailing 6-2 in the match. Clanton finished the season with a 36-8 record. She was the lone Knights’ wrestler to come away with a state title on Saturday. Mikalah Whitehouse fell in the 130-pound match 11-0 against Mountain View’s Isla Baeza.
Northridge finished in fifth place as a team with 147.5 points, just 0.5 points behind fourth-place Stansbury. The Knights had a third-place finish from Rachel Jones at 105 pounds, while Alanis Smith (100 pounds) and Emma Aviles (190) finished in fourth.
Bonneville sophomores Alexis Kirkland (140) and Hannah Bowler (155) took third place in their respective weight classes. Kirkland won the third-place match with a 7-0 decision against Cedar Valley’s Rhya Balmforth and Bowler pinned Wasatch’s Katie Bird in 57 seconds.
Uintah won the team title with 208.5 points, holding off a deep field of Cedar Valley (181), Springville (171.5), Stansbury (148) and Northridge (147.5).
In the 5A boys tournament, the Viewmont High duo of Moses Espinoza-Owens (165) and Marcus Espinoza-Owens (175) claimed state titles. Moses scored a 7-6 decision win over Murray High’s Isaac Orrock, while Marcus won 7-1 against Payson’s Chandler Loveless.
Box Elder’s lone finalist, Jackson Ricks, lost the 132-pound title match in a 7-3 decision against Wasatch’s Austin Kelly.
In the team race, Uintah (296) edged Payson (253) and Wasatch (234) for the title. Viewmont was Region 5’s high finisher in sixth place with 85.5 points and Box Elder was in eighth place with 76 points.
In 4A, Bear River girls wrestling’s title chase came up short with 353 points, just behind champion Mountain Crest, which had 399.5 points.
Sadie Hardy (100), Abigail Trayhorn (140) and Eve Allsup (155) were the Bears’ state-champion wrestlers.
On the boys side, Bear River finished second as a team with 232 points, well behind champion Mountain Crest (361). Max Miller won the championship at 132 pounds with a 5-1 decision over Hurricane’s Seth Armstrong to finish the season 46-6.
STATE SWIMMING
Davis High senior Sam Carlson won both the boys 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races at the 6A state swimming championships Saturday at BYU.
Carlson swam 50 freestyle in 21 seconds flat, beating Roy High junior Sam Williams (21.52) and Syracuse junior Sawyer Portillo (21.69) in the process.
Carlson won the 100 freestyle in 46.99 seconds, also beating Same Williams in second place (47.58).
Carlson also swam the anchor leg on then Darts’ first-place boys 200 freestyle relay team. The group of Sam Landheim, Dylan Grant, Tyler Bennett and Carlson swam the event in 1:29.59, just .14 seconds ahead of Herriman’s team in second place, and .35 seconds ahead of Syracuse’s team in third place.
Davis senior Kalia Merrill finished third in the girls 100 backstroke in 59.45 seconds and Davis’ Garrett Barker took sixth in the boys 200 freestyle in 1:49.95. As a team, Davis finished seventh in the 6A girls championship with 123 points and the boys were ninth with 102 points.
Weber High carried the Region 1 torch in the girls team race with 127 points to finish sixth. Layla Walker finished sixth in the girls 50 freestyle in 25.24 seconds and seventh in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.97. Waimea Barlow took sixth in the girls 500 freestyle in 5:32.11.
Barlow, Walker, Brooke Mortensen and Isabelle Wolchek took fourth place for Weber in the girls 400 freestyle relay in 3:48.21.
For the Syracuse boys team, Sawyer Portillo finished second in the 100 butterfly in 52.34 seconds to go with his third-place finish in the 50 freestyle. The Titans’ boys 200 freestyle relay team of Portillo, Collin Burton, Sam Price and Ben Thorne finished third in 1:29.94.
Portillo, Burton, Thorne and Soren Portillo teamed up in the 400 freestyle relay to finish fifth in 3:23.71. Syracuse’s boys team finished seventh in the team standings with 118 points. Skyridge won the boys championship with 283 points and Lone Peak won the girls championship with 434.5 points.
In the 5A swimming championship, Bonneville’s Sage Patterson finished third in the girls 100 butterfly in 59.32 seconds, edging Timpview’s Kate Reichner by .26 seconds to get third.
Patterson also finished in sixth place in both the 200 freestyle in 1:59.59, and the 50 freestyle in 25.10 seconds.
Box Elder’s Roman Nowell finished sixth in the boys 100 butterfly in 52.42 seconds, and TayLee Nelson took sixth in the girls 100 breaststroke.
Skyline High swept the team titles with 317.5 points on the girls side and 350.5 points on the boys side.
