Prep roundup: Late surge puts Layton baseball over Weber in game played at Fremont

PLAIN CITY — Layton and Weber played 1 1/2 baseball games Wednesday at Fremont High due to snow on both Layton and Weber’s baseball fields.

Layton won the first game 15-8. The second game was suspended after four innings due to rain and darkness with Weber leading 9-7.

In the first game, Weber led 4-1 after five innings before Layton (2-3, 2-0 Region 1) scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and six more in the seventh. Fish Manning and Preston Brimhall homered. Tanner Neil hit 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Bryson Esplin batted 2 for 2 with two walks and three stolen bases.

Dominic Salerno homered for Weber (1-4, 0-2) and had two RBIs. Jarett Hill and Dax Rhees drove in two runs each. Tyce Abbott batted 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

FREMONT 6, SYRACUSE 0

SYRACUSE — Peyton Surrage pitched a shutout as Fremont completed a region series sweep.

Surrage allowed one walk, struck out five and also had two base hits at the plate with one RBI for Fremont (4-2, 3-0 Region 1).

Jake Hopkins had a base hit for Syracuse (1-7, 0-3).

BEAR RIVER 14 & 18, LOGAN 3 & 1

GARLAND — Bear River won a pair of five-inning games and finished off a region-opening series sweep against Logan.

In the first game, Easton Goodliffe batted 4 for 4 with two doubles, one RBI and pitched four innings with one run allowed for Bear River (5-2, 3-0 Region 11). Holden Potter drove in three runs, while Degan Rigby and Kolton Summers brought in two each.

In the second game, Potter struck out 12 batters in four shutout innings with two hits and three walks allowed, while also batting 3 for 3. Rigby batted 4 for 4 with four RBIs and two doubles. Gehrig Marble drove in two runs and hit a triple.

UNION 3, MORGAN 0

ROOSEVELT — Camron Talbot, JJ Compton, Ben Harden and Trevor DeWitt all had base hits in a loss for Morgan (0-7).

SOFTBALL

SYRACUSE 12, CLEARFIELD 6

SYRACUSE — Syracuse pounded 16 hits in a region win over Clearfield.

Grace Thomas batted 4 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs for Syracuse (4-1, 1-0 Region 1). Jazmine Prathan hit 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and a double. Brooklyn Sackolwitz doubled and Olivia Brown got the win in the circle.

Elizabeth Salazar hit a double for Clearfield (1-7, 0-3) and Nevea Cordova had two RBIs.

FREMONT 7, SKY VIEW 6

PLAIN CITY — Savannah Palmatier batted 2 for 4 with two RBIs as Fremont came back from 5-3 down to win a non-region game.

Kacie Howard drove in two runs for Fremont (4-1), Keysha McKean stole two bases and Audrey Cooper pitched a complete game.

MORGAN 11, MURRAY 8

MURRAY — Joesi Kelly batted 4 for 4 with one home run, three doubles and six RBIs to lead Morgan to a non-region win.

Tess Polad batted 4 for 5 and Kaiya Peterson hit 2 for 5 with two RBIs for Morgan (2-2), which played its first game in more than two weeks.

BOYS SOCCER

FARMINGTON 1, FREMONT 0

PLAIN CITY — Boston Petersen scored in the second half to keep Farmington unbeaten with a win at Fremont (5-2, 1-2 Region 1).

Davis Wadsworth kept the clean sheet for Farmington (5-0, 4-0).

Syracuse at Davis: May 8, 3:30 p.m.
