Girls golf: Weber wins every Region 1 match, claims 1st region title since 2012

Weber High's girls golf team poses for photographs after winning the Region 1 championship on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at Glen Eagle Golf Course.

SYRACUSE — Region 1’s high school girls golf season started in mid-April on still-frozen golf courses, and ended Tuesday with sunscreen and mosquito repellent.

Amid Utah’s display of weather whiplash the last three weeks, Weber High’s girls golf team was steady and consistent.

The Warriors, who for the past decade have watched Davis and Fremont trade places as girls golf region champions, clinched their first region title since 2012 by winning Tuesday’s match at Glen Eagle Golf Course.

“Awesome. It’s really fun, and it hasn’t happened in a long time, so it’s cool,” Weber senior Izzy Rawlings said.

Four Weber golfers finished in the top 10 on Tuesday, just like most of the region matches this season.

“I just think we push through and we don’t give up. It’s really cool to see everyone improve every week,” Rawlings said.

Remi Rawlings shot 77 (fourth place), Brynn Bischoff shot 78 (tied fifth) and both Izzy Rawlings and Samantha Messerly shot 79 (tied for seventh). The Warriors shot 313 as a team, 18 shots better than Fremont’s 331.

“With the late start, the girls just kept doing what they could do indoors at an indoor simulator and whatnot,” WHS coach Kory Woodland said. “We spent a lot of time at Toad’s (Fun Zone) in their nice covered area to bash balls into the snow, and then they were ready when the sun was shining or when the course was playable, they had the right mindset to get out and do what they know to do.”

Fremont’s Madalyn Hadley won medalist honors Tuesday with a 70; her teammate Susan Tiffner shot 75 to finish in solo third place.

Farmington’s Sydney Richards shot 73 to finish solo second place on Tuesday, making it eight golfers who broke 80 on Glen Eagle’s flat, predictable setup.

Richards was the season medalist, finishing ahead of Hadley.

The state tournament starts next week at Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton. Lone Peak has won four of the last six state titles in the highest classification (6A, and before that, 5A) and enters as the favorite.

“Winning gives everyone confidence and I hope that everyone can show out and, I don’t know, have fun,” Izzy Rawlings said.

Weber practiced its short game a lot over the past week, an area where the Warriors both played well on Tuesday and where they think they can improve.

“We’ve left some shots on the course every time we’ve teed it up, so we believe if we can dial in dedicated practice to short game and shave 4-5 shots per girl, and give it a chance to really be in contention,” Woodland said.
