Prep football roundup: Fremont takes Region 1 opener over Layton; Ogden, Morgan pick up wins

PLAIN CITY — Brigg Grange rushed for two touchdowns and Slade Parker passed for two more as Fremont High football opened region play with a 30-14 home win over Layton on Friday.

Grange scored on a pair of 3-yard runs to give Fremont (2-4, 1-0 Region 1) a 14-0 lead after one quarter. Parker hit Jace Hadley for a 22-yard score in the second quarter and found Hadley again for a 33-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Jaden Flowers added a 27-yard field goal to give the Silverwolves a 30-6 lead midway through the final frame.

Madden Sargent tossed a 13-yard scoring strike to Porter Cannon to get Layton (0-5, 0-1) on the board in the second quarter. Sargent capped the scoring with a 6-yard run inside the final two minutes.

For Fremont, Parker threw 19 of 28 for 220 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Grange totaled 101 yards on 28 carries, for his two TDs.

For Layton, Sargent completed 12 of 25 passes for 126 yards and an interception to go with his touchdown pass. Cannon rushed for 91 yards on only five carries and had seven receptions for 93 yards.


ROOSEVELT — Kale Adams ran for two touchdowns as Ogden won its 3A North region opener on the road to break a two-game losing streak.

Max Trujillo ran for 86 yards and a score for Ogden (4-2, 1-0 3A North). Dallon Miller had two interceptions and Carter Rasmussen blocked a field goal.


MORGAN — Morgan scored four touchdowns in the first quarter on the way to a big region-opening win over Juan Diego.

Beck Sheffield connected with Lincoln Gilson for a 92-yard touchdown pass to get Morgan (3-3, 1-0 3A North) on the board.

Sheffield sandwiched two more scoring strikes around a Zak Sargent 10-yard touchdown run. Brogan Garrett caught an 8-yard touchdown pass and Gilson added a 7-yard touchdown catch to make the score 27-0 with 2:07 left in the first.

Sargent added a 7-yard scoring scamper midway through the second quarter and the Trojans led 34-7 at the half. Gillson caught his third touchdown from Sheffield, this one from 43 yards out, to make the score 41-7 early in the third quarter.

After a Juan Diego touchdown, Beau Johnson capped the scoring with 2:08 left by booting a beautiful 48-yard field goal.


BOUNTIFUL — Woods Cross outrushed Viewmont 394-82 to stay unbeaten in Region 5.

Cash Henderson rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Lock Smoot added 127 yards and two touchdowns, for Woods Cross (4-2, 2-1 Region 5).

Drez Jensen caught four passes for 44 yards to lead Viewmont (2-4, 0-3), also catching an 18-yard touchdown pass from Daren Tovey in the second quarter.


SMITHFIELD — Trailing 35-14, Bear River scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the third coming with 11 seconds left in the game, to make the score 35-34.

The Bears went for two and the win, but the pass fell incomplete to preserve the Sky View victory.

Owen Olsen passed for three scores and ran for one for Bear River (3-3, 1-1 Region 11). Olsen connected with Jace Roberts from 7 yards out to get the Bears on the scoreboard.

With 2:30 left in the third quarter, Olsen scored on a 17-yard scamper to make the score 28-14. Olsen connected with Roberts again with 10:53 left in the game, and Roberts sprinted 75 yards to paydirt to make the score 35-21.

Tydon Jones scored on a 2-yard plunge with 6:49 left, then Bear River’s defense forced a Sky View punt and the Bears drove the length of the field. Olsen connected with Talon Marble right down the middle for an 18-yard touchdown, setting up the fateful two-point try.
