OGDEN — In one of its many comeback pushes, Ogden High boys volleyball turned a 9-1 deficit to open the third set against Morgan into match point.

But at 24-23, Christian Nunez fired a kill in the first of three match points Morgan faced in the set, and Ogden errors helped the Trojans claim the frame 29-27 to stave off defeat.

That sparked the two best sets of the night and what became a reverse sweep for Morgan, taking a tight match between two evenly matched teams 22-25, 21-25, 29-27, 25-23, 16-14 to open region play in 3A North.

“We’ve got awesome talent, awesome potential, but new to the sport of volleyball so that was important for me to see kind of what they have in their hearts to battle back,” Morgan coach Kyle Komenda said. “We’re a work in progress but I love their heart and I’m excited about the rest of the season.”

Unlike the first three sets that saw margins of five-plus points grow for either team, the fourth set was a point-for-point deadlock through 14-14 as both teams cleaned up errors and played long, exciting rallies. But a Nunez/Caleb Stephens block, a Matt Komenda kill and two Dex Wallin blocks helped Morgan (8-6, 1-0 3A North) separate to match point at 24-19.

As it did all night, Ogden (6-7, 0-1) had an answer to the deficit. Adam Ballard swung two big kills and an Aiden Holbrook ace got it to 24-23 before the Tigers couldn’t return a ball during a scramble, getting the Trojans to the fifth set.

Morgan gave Ogden some of its comeback medicine in the fifth. The Tigers jumped to a 7-2 lead on two Ballard kills and had a 10-4 advantage on a mishit that saw the Trojans draw a yellow card while arguing for an Ogden tip.

Two Matt Komenda kills loomed large as the Trojans somehow rallied and drew it to 11-11. The Tigers had another match point at 14-13 after a Crowther touch kill but Morgan scored three straight and won the match on a combo block from Wallin and Kevin Wangsgard.

The defeat belies how Ogden competed throughout the night.

Ogden got down 22-19 in the first set after Morgan’s Madden Bell served three consecutive aces to spark a Trojans run. But Keen Crowther did the same for Ogden, serving three straight aces for a 6-0 run and a 25-22 Tigers set.

Ogden again turned a 13-8 deficit into an 18-13 lead in the second set, a 10-0 run in which middle blocker Gavin Ording stuffed a block and tallied a point by dunking a Morgan overpass, leading to the 25-21 set win.

“Our players love it and play with a lot of ferocity, we’ve just got to improve the belief, that they’re the team that deserves to win,” Ogden coach Tim Wright said. “We’re a young team … but we’re seeing a lot of good things. They’re listening, they’re coachable, it’s just remembering it during every point.”

For Ogden, Ballard had 12 kills and 11 digs. Crowther totaled 13 kills and 20 digs, and Case Crowther added 13 digs and four blocks.
