Fremont High School alumnus Ky Bush had his dreams come true Monday.
The 6-foot-6 lefty got his Major League call-up Sunday and made his big-league debut Monday night, getting the start for the Chicago White Sox in Oakland.
In his 60th career professional start, the 2018 Fremont grad tossed four innings and allowed two hits, but gave up three runs due to five walks, while striking out three against the Athletics.
His call-up came with some pressure as Chicago was trying to break a 20-game losing streak and avoid an American League-record 21st straight defeat. Bush departed with the White Sox trailing 3-1 but JP Sears and the Oakland A’s staff held the White Sox to four hits on the way to a 5-1 victory.
“Got the first one out of the way,” Bush said, as reported by the Associated Press. “Obviously, a little amped up. But happy to debut and just be here.”

Bush was the Standard-Examiner’s All-Area Baseball MVP in 2018 and the Kansas City Royals selected him in the 40th round of that summer’s MLB draft. Bush opted for college, pitching in 2019 at Washington State and then exploding to lead the West Coast Conference in strikeouts after transferring to Saint Mary’s for the 2021 season.
The Los Angeles Angels made Bush the highest in a small handful of draft picks from Weber County by taking him in the second round (45th overall) of the 2021 draft.
He threw 12 innings that summer with the high-A Tri-City Dust Devils (Pasco, Washington). Bush then spent part of two seasons with the Rocky City Trash Pandas, the Angels’ double-A affiliate in Madison, Alabama. In 2022, he had a 3.67 ERA in 21 starts.
The Angels traded Bush to the White Sox in 2023. He made nine starts that year and 14 more this season for Chicago’s double-A team, the Birmingham Barons, before moving up to Triple-A Charlotte where he threw 19 innings before his promotion Sunday.
“A little bit shocked, wasn’t sure how to react,” Bush told MLB.com when recounting the phone call informing him of his call-up Sunday. “Very excited for this opportunity.”
