OGDEN — Rikley Moss, assisted by Elle Weston, hardly needed a full minute after kickoff to find the net but the sophomore’s score was plenty for the Ogden girls soccer team’s first win of the regular season in a 1-0 shutout over Clearfield on Friday.

As quickly as the Tigers (1-2) took an early lead, the match was suspended for more than an hour due to nearby lightning. By 7 p.m., both squads returned for warmups and continued their battle at Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex.

Ogden’s seen little time off the pitch this week, now prepping for its fourth regular-season date on Monday vs. West Field (1-1). Friday’s delay arrived 13 minutes into the match and made for what Moss considered a well-deserved break.

“We were relaxing, stretching. We’ve had three games this week so just stretching and getting ready to play another half,” Moss said. “Playing together this week, we’ve learned a lot about each other as coaches and players, and it’s been nice. I think after a couple more weeks, we’ll be able to mesh a little bit better.”

Returning to the field, Ogden and Clearfield exchanged missed scoring opportunities on free kicks with five minutes left in the first half. The Tigers clung to their one-score lead heading into halftime.

Senior goalkeeper Grace Malan was a regular answer for Ogden in the second half, building on her late first-half save against Clearfield junior Tatum Thomas with three minutes to go. On multiple looks across the field, Thomas tested the Malan and the Tigers again in the second half.

“It’s Grace, she’s always making baller saves,” Moss said.

Malan pushed two Clearfield attempts, the first by sophomore Cahtaya Christensen at the 25-minute mark and another by junior Kamryn Weaver during the 8-minute mark, which went off the crossbar to keep the Falcons silent in the second half.

Thomas tested Malan again late and the Tigers’ keeper didn’t flinch. The Clearfield junior tried for the right corner of the goal with two minutes left but pulled her shot just right of the post.

Asked about his team’s shot selection, Clearfield (0-2) coach Kelly Parke said he’s still unsure where his team’s goals are going to come from as the Falcons’ attack works out its early-season kinks.

“I don’t feel like we controlled the game,” Parke said. “We definitely created some chances for sure. That’s a good (Ogden) team.”
