CLEARFIELD — Clearfield girls soccer used goals by juniors Tatum Thomas and Kamryn Weaver to push through Fremont 2-1 on Tuesday for its first win of the 2024 campaign. The second half was interrupted by a rain delay with the Falcons up 1-0 and 20 minutes remaining.

The victory marks the first step forward for Clearfield (1-2) after opening the season with losses at Green Canyon and Ogden. Thomas, assisted by Weaver for the Falcons’ first score eight minutes into the match, said her team came into Tuesday focused on the game plan.

“I feel like we worked really hard,” Thomas said. “We all really wanted that win. Everyone was working really hard from the back, find our marks and stuff that led up to the goals.”

Fremont’s visit was also unique for Falcons coach Kelly Parke, who previously led the Silverwolves (0-2), now led by Alain Reyes, for eight seasons before stepping into the Clearfield job last fall. Weaver said the contest was a unique opportunity for Clearfield.

“It was a good one against (Parke)’s old team,” Weaver said. “I think that’s why (we) went so hard because he wanted us to go so hard.”

Leaving halftime down a score, Fremont quickly changed the story when freshman striker Lexi Hadley found the net just eight minutes back onto the pitch. Around the 25th-minute mark, Weaver created space and punched in Clearfield’s game-winner shortly before the delay.

After a 45-minute delay, Clearfield senior Sadie Goble made a pair of key saves down the stretch – including a one-handed diving stop with 16 minutes left – to keep Fremont off the scoreboard.

Fremont junior Rubi Flores stopped what could’ve been an insurance goal for the Falcons with under a minute remaining. While Clearfield created opportunities for itself consistently throughout the match, Weaver said Parke expects more from the Falcons’ midfield and defense.

“(Parke) wants us to be more possessive-minded,” Weaver said. “He’s really big on defense in the middle and that’s what we’re working on.”

Both teams return to action Thursday, as Clearfield travels to Viewmont (3:30 p.m.) and Fremont heads to Ridgeline (7 p.m.).
