Prep football roundup: Freshman leads Weber to road victory; Ogden, Box Elder win blowouts
3A Morgan routs defending 4A champ on opening night
SARATOGA SPRINGS — With senior Crew Cacciacarne injured, freshman Carter Payne passed for three touchdowns and led Weber High football to a 24-16 win Friday at Westlake.
Weber (1-0) spotted Westlake a 10-0 lead before Payne connected with Brock Dean for an 80-yard scoring strike with 9:45 left in the second quarter. Four minutes later, Tyson Higgs hauled in a Payne pass and took it 37 yards to paydirt.
Alex Johnson kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the first half to give the Warriors a 17-10 lead at the break.
Westlake scored with 1:02 left in the third quarter but missed the game-tying PAT kick. Dyson Parker hauled in a Payne pass from 7 yards out for the final score with 10:05 left in the game.
Payne completed 19 of 41 passes for 306 yards. Dean had five receptions for 131 yards while Higgs added three catches for 61 yards. Parker had 23 rushing attempts for 50 yards and seven catches for 69 yards.
Caden Lindholm led the Warrior defense with seven tackles and Tyler Payne added six tackles. Aiden Rodarte hauled in two interceptions.
OGDEN 38, COTTONWOOD 3
MURRAY — Vinnie Apodaca completed 9 of 11 passing attempts for 140 yards and two touchdowns as Ogden picked up an opening-day win at Cottonwood.
Both of those touchdown tosses went to Synic Harvey for 33 yards: once in the first quarter that put Ogden (1-0) up 17-0, and once to cap the Tigers’ scoring for a 38-0 lead at halftime.
Manny Moreno scooped up a fumble and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Jayden Long (6 yards) and Keen Crowther (3 yards) punched in short rushing touchdowns for the Tigers. Kye Jensen put through a 36-yard field goal.
Crowther finished with 70 yards on 10 carries. Harvey hauled in three receptions for 83 yards. Long and Anderson Curry each had six solo tackles, while Eduardo Contreras had two tackles for loss and one sack.
BOX ELDER 52, KEARNS 7
BRIGHAM CITY — Carter Buchanan ran for three touchdowns and passed for one more as Box Elder ran over Kearns for a season-opening win.
Buchanan book-ended an Ethan Barber 34-yard field goal with scoring runs of 17 and 9 yards to give Box Elder (1-0) an early 17-0 lead. Jay Macias added an 11-yard scoring scamper before Buchanan found the end zone from 28 yards out with 30 seconds left in the first half and the Bees led 31-0 at the break.
With 7:53 left in the third quarter, Maddox Earnest took a Buchanan pass 16 yards for a score. Tyeson Hansen scored on a 3-yard plunge with 8:08 left and Kadyn Reyes capped the scoring on a 6-yard run with 3:10 left.
MORGAN 41, CRIMSON CLIFFS 13
MORGAN — Lincoln Gilson scored on a 49-yard punt return to open the scoring with 8:14 left in the first quarter and the rout was on as 3A Morgan grabbed a big win over 4A defending state champion Crimson Cliffs.
After Luke Bauerle returned an interception to the CC 24-yard line, Gilson added a 12-yard scoring run for Morgan (1-0). Beck Sheffield scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper and the Trojans led 20-0 at the half.
Kanyon Leonelli swapped touchdowns with Crimson Cliffs, scoring on scampers of 3 and 5 yards to give Morgan a 34-13 lead with 11:05 left in the game. Jace Nye added a 65-yard, scoop-and-score fumble recovery with 8:10 left for the final margin — one of four turnovers the Trojans forced on the night.
Sheffield threw 13 of 24 for 171 yards. Boston Zack had three catches for 69 yards. Gilson totaled 42 rushing yards.
LEHI 38, DAVIS 14
LEHI — Davis took an early lead at Lehi but couldn’t keep up with the Pioneers in a road loss.
Tradon Bessinger threw to Bode Sparrow for a 9-yard touchdown and Davis (0-1) held a 7-0 lead at the 3:44 mark in the first quarter. By the time Bessinger and Sparrow connected again for a 2-yard TD throw in the fourth quarter, the score was 35-14.
Lehi followed the Davis opening salvo with three straight rushing touchdowns from Devaughn Eka of 62, 4 and 18 yards. Eka rushed for 157 yards. Lehi’s yardage advantage was a slim 493-419.
Bessinger threw 29 of 43 for 291 yards and no interceptions, and led Davis with 74 yards on six rushes. Jaxton Itaaehau caught two passes for 70 yards and Tyson Baggett added 48 yards on five catches.
RIVERTON 13, SYRACUSE 7
RIVERTON — Hoyt Pula scored on a 5-yard run with 1:32 left in the first quarter to pull Syracuse to a 7-7 tie, but the Titans could not generate any more points in a loss at Riverton.
Syracuse (0-1) gave up a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 28-yard boot in the third for the final margin.
The Titans saw a potential tying or game-winning throw fall incomplete in the end zone on the final play.
COPPER HILLS 41, CLEARFIELD 15
WEST JORDAN — Jordan Tovey connected with Gage Miles for two touchdowns but the Falcons could not stop the Copper Hills rushing attack in a road loss.
Miles took a Tovey pass 15 yards to the end zone for Clearfield (0-1) to cut the Copper Hills lead to 21-7 with 3:12 left in the second quarter. The duo connected for another touchdown, capped by a two-point run, to make the score 28-15 late in the third quarter.
RIDGELINE 41, BONNEVILLE 7
MILLVILLE — Eli Mansaray took a backward pass from Cole Leuders and tossed it 15 yards to a wide-open Tyler Cole in the back of the end zone for Bonneville’s (0-1) lone touchdown in a loss at Ridgeline.
CEDAR VALLEY 36, BEAR RIVER 30
EAGLE MOUNTAIN — Jaxson Theurer passed for four touchdowns but Bear River fell at Cedar Valley.
Eli Braegger got behind the defense and hauled in a bomb from Theurer to give Bear River (0-1) a 7-3 lead at the 3:41 mark of the first quarter. Theurer found Glaiden Behrens on a screen play and Behrens sprinted 72 yards for a score with 17 seconds left in the second quarter that cut the CV lead to 17-12 at the break.
A bad snap on a Ceder Valley punt gave the Bears a safety and made the score 17-16. Fourth quarter touchdown passes from Theurer to Korver Riley for 15 yards and Kash Avery from 10 yards out tied the game 30-30 with 4:15 left. Three plays later, the Aviators got the game-winner on a 64-yard bomb.
EAST 42, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 19
SALT LAKE CITY — Layton Christian played up three classifications on the road and gave 5A East its best shot in the first half.
Kaya Madhlazi scored on an 80-yard run to get Layton Christian (0-1) on the board with 7:39 left in the first quarter. Brayden Bott caught two touchdown passes — a 33-yard strike from Chris Munroe and a 16-yard pass from Utulei Simaumea with 26 seconds left in the second quarter to make the score 27-19 at the half.

SYRACUSE — Madi Shillig, Erin Bott and Taylor Sims combined to keep a clean sheet as Syracuse shut out Riverton on Thursday.
Taylee Hughes scored a brace and added an assist for Syracuse (4-1). Abby Affleck and Brooke Vorwaller each found the back of the net once. Talia Thompson, Jocee Eddy and Sophie Martin assisted one score apiece.
