Prep roundup: Bessinger throws for 7 TDs, Davis football crushes Copper Hills
KAYSVILLE — Tradon Bessinger tossed seven touchdown passes and Davis High football scored 28 points in the second quarter to take a 49-8 lead into the break, racing to a 56-15 home win Friday over Copper Hills.
Bessinger connected with Tyson Baggett for three scores for Davis (0-1) — from 30, 43 and 18 yards out. Owen Talbot also reached the end zone thrice: an 18-yard reception, a 17-yard run, and a 7-yard catch.
Bessinger found Easton Frasure for a 60-yard pitch-and-catch, and Bode Sparrow caught Bessinger’s seventh scoring strike from 14 yards out.
Bessinger completed 17 of 20 passes for 348 yards to go with his seven scores. Baggett had six catches for 118 yards. Talbot caught four passes for 35 yards and added 44 yards on five rushes. Davis did not attempt a punt.
LAYTON CHRISTIAN 21, JUAB 7
NEPHI — Chris Monroe passed for one score and ran for one, and the LCA defense pitched a shutout in a win at Juab.
Monroe tossed an 8-yard scoring strike to Hayden Tuinei to give Layton Christian (1-1) a 7-0 lead with 1:04 left in the second quarter.
Juab scored on a 78-yard fumble return to tie the game in the third quarter.
Monroe gave LCA the lead for good with a 5-yard run at the 5:47 mark of the fourth quarter, then Kaya Madhlazi capped the scoring on a 7-yard run with 2:39 left in the game.
BRIGHTON 34, SYRACUSE 21
SYRACUSE — Syracuse’s Ledger Wight passed for two touchdowns but Brighton scored the game’s last two touchdowns to win.
Xander Garcia returned an interception 26 yards to give Syracuse (0-2) a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage. Wight connected with Hoyt Pula for a 79-yard touchdown pass and the Titans led 14-0 late in the first quarter.
Brighton scored twice in the second quarter for a 14-14 tie at the half, then took the lead midway through the third quarter. Wight tossed a 35-yard scoring strike to Tanner Merril to forge a 21-21 tie with 4:18 left in the third quarter. Two Bengal fourth-quarter touchdowns salted away the win.
MTN CREST 15, BOX ELDER 14
HYRUM — Box Elder gave only one touchdown to Mountain Crest, but it was the game-winner and the Bees fell on the road.
Jay Macias opened the scoring on a 23-yard run, giving Box Elder (1-1) a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Mountain Crest kicked three straight field goals, the third coming at the 3:25 mark of the third quarter to go ahead 9-7.
Carter Buchanan found the end zone on a 4-yard scraper and the Bees led 14-9 with 8:40 left in the game.
MC scored the game-winner on a 10-yard plunge with 5:38 left.
CEDAR 34, BEAR RIVER 28
GARLAND — Bear River turned the ball over four times in the first half, leading to a 27-0 deficit at the half, and couldn’t catch up in a home loss to Cedar.
Tydon Jones ripped a 51-yard TD run to get Bear River (0-2) on the board at the 5:55 mark in the third quarter. Jaxson Theurer found Eli Braegger for a 13-yard scoring strike and a two-point run made the score 27-15 late in the third.
Cedar answered with their fifth touchdown pass, then Theurer tossed a 6-yard touchdown to Tatum Stevens with 6:12 left in the game. The Bears then recovered an onside kick.
With BR moving backward and facing fourth-and-a-bus-ride, Stevens got behind the Cedar defense and hauled in what became a 59-yard touchdown to make the score 34-28 with 3:08 left. Bear River couldn’t recover a second onside kick, however, and the Reds kneeled out the clock.
ST. JOSEPH 41, WHITEHORSE 8
MONTEZUMA CREEK — Gunner Windsor threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as St. Joseph opened its eight-man season with a road win.
Windsor ran in touchdowns of 10 and 35 yards. He threw a 15-yard score to Kayden Huss and a 43-yarder to Declan Yarosik. Jacob Scehnet punched in a 15-yarder on the ground, then returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring for St. Joseph (1-0).

LAYTON — Layton scored four times in each half to beat Westlake at home Saturday.
Milly Smith and Kenadee Godderidge each scored a brace for Layton (4-1). Callie Holje netted in the first half and assisted three other goals. Anna Ward, Ryann Jensen and Hana Lee each scored once.
CLEARFIELD def. NORTHRIDGE
CLEARFIELD — After finishing regular time and two sets of extra time tied 3-3, Clearfield outshot Northridge 5-4 on penalty kicks for a region win.
Clearfield (3-3, 2-1) did not report stats.
Sophie Sivulich netted a hat trick for Northridge (4-2, 2-1 Region 5). Carsen Reiva, Mylee Williams and Tenlee Thomas each assisted one score.

LOGAN — Avery Charlesworth kept a clean sheet and West Field won at Logan (0-5, 0-3 Region 11) on Thursday.
Phalastine Odeh and Haylee John each netted for West Field (4-3, 1-1). Landry VonBurg and Ellie Chugg tallied one assist apiece.
