Prep basketball playoff roundup: Roy boys, Weber girls win games on the road

SALT LAKE CITY -- No. 17 Roy High boys basketball won the first quarter 17-9 and played No. 16 East evenly from there to claim a 67-60 road win Tuesday in the first round of the 5A state tournament.

Bronson Belnap totaled 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding four rebounds and four assists, to lead Roy (12-12). Colby Frokjer added 14 points and eight rebounds, making three 3-pointers, and Dahlen Pontius had a 13-point, 13-rebound night.

Roy shot 9 of 20 from the 3-point line to help hold off a 29-point outing from East (9-15) guard Sawyer Sutton.

The Royals play again Wednesday night at No. 1 seed Alta (21-3).

WASATCH 61, BOX ELDER 44

HEBER CITY -- No. 20 Box Elder trailed 15-9 after one quarter, then No. 13 Wasatch (12-12) took control with an 18-8 second quarter in a 5A first-round game.

Trevor Wilkinson and Max Isaacson each scored 13 points for Box Elder, with Wilkinson hitting three 3-pointers. Elijah Kersey added nine points. The Bees end the season with a 9-15 record.

SALEM HILLS 63, NORTHRIDGE 58

LAYTON -- No. 15 Northridge led 14-10 after one quarter, then No. 18 Salem Hills took the lead with a 15-10 second quarter in a 5A first-round contest.

Bentley Whitear led No. 15 Northridge (10-14) with 20 points and four 3-pointers. Peyton Perkins scored 16 points with four treys. Josh Kitchen and Logan Birt each added eight points and two 3-pointers. The Knights made 10 two-point field goals and 12 treys.

Chase DeGraffenried led all scorers with 28 points for Salem Hills (10-14).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WEBER 59, RIVERTON 51

RIVERTON -- No. 17 Weber gave up a 40-32 lead in the fourth quarter, then held No. 16 Riverton (4-19) scoreless in overtime for a 6A first-round win.

Weber (7-17) hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. Logyn Howell led Weber with 16 points and three 3-pointers. Abby Sayer added 15 points and two treys. Katelyn Poulsen scored eight points.

The Warriors advance to travel to No. 1 Copper Hills at 7 p.m. Thursday.

CLEARFIELD 58, SKYLINE 42

CLEARFIELD -- Xiyah Yarbrough scored a game-high 20 points to lead No. 9 Clearfield to a 5A first-round win over No. 24 Skyline (5-18).

Izzy Wyaskett tallied 13 points for Clearfield (17-6) with two 3-pointers. Jayla Kearns added 13 points.

The Falcons will next play at No. 8 Brighton at 7 p.m. Thursday.
