Prep basketball playoff roundup: Bear River boys outlast Hurricane in overtime

GARLAND — No. 11 Bear River High boys basketball held off No. 22 Hurricane with a 58-55 overtime home win Wednesday in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

Kyver Jensen scored all five points for Bear River (15-8) in the extra period, making three free throws and splitting a screen for a driving layup.

After Hurricane (5-19) scored to go up two in the final minute of regulation, Bridger Barfuss connected on a corner 3-pointer on a drive and kick from Jensen to put BR ahead 52-51 with 38 seconds left.

Hurricane fouled three times to get the Bears in the bonus, Barfuss made one free throw with 9.2 left, and Hurricane’s Thailand Gubler scored a rebound putback just before the buzzer to force overtime.

Gubler scored another rebound putback to open the overtime period but Jensen outscored the Tigers 5-0 from there.

Bear River goes on the road Friday night to No. 6 Cottonwood (18-5), undefeated champs from Region 10, in the second round.

ALTA 82, ROY 48

SANDY — After No. 17 Roy won at No. 16 East on Tuesday night, No. 1 Alta was too much on the second night of a back-to-back and the Royals saw their season end in the second round of the 5A playoffs.

Corben Schuffenhauer led Roy (12-13) with 12 points, adding two assists. Dahlen Pontius had seven points and five rebounds, and Bronson Belnap scored seven points.

Alta (22-3) had five players in double figures, shot 30 of 41 on two-pointers, and led 76-39 after three quarters.

COPPER HILLS 65, SYRACUSE 62

WEST JORDAN — No. 16 Copper Hills (8-15) got past No. 17 Syracuse with late free throws in the first round of the 6A tournament.

Terik Hamblin scored 15 points to lead Syracuse (7-17). Joshua Godfrey scored 14 points, while Beckam Rees and Logan Goddard added 13 apiece.
